61.2: A Development of Large‐Screen Full HD LCD TV with Frame‐Rate‐Conversion Technology

Abstract: In this paper, we describe our development of Frame Rate Conversion (FRC) technology that provides picture quality improvement for LCD by doubling its frame rate. Based on an analysis of motion speed of real broadcasting video, we point out that the "character telop" is a special type of input signal that is considered to be able to obtain a significant picture quality improvement by using double-frame rate LCD-TV. Then, an FRC technology that has a feature of improving a picture quality of "character telop" … Show more

“…Therefore, how a fastmoving object is dealt with is an important factor in the system design. Data obtained from the analysis of daily broadcasting programs would useful for establishing such conditions if the study aims at the improvement of the current system [11]. On the other hand, if the study aims at the development of a new system, what kinds of objects are dealt with and how are they expressed on the screen should be made clear.…”

“…We also demonstrated that the same frame memory can be shared between the RTC and the frame-doubling circuit, which means MA-AGD can be achieved with a very small fraction of hardware cost. Although the MC-FRC approach is considered to be the highest performing solution for 100/120-Hz LCD-TV, [5][6][7] it has a significant implementation cost, and the risk of highly visible artifacts in challenging scenes where most motion-compensation algorithms break or just jump into repeat mode. MA-AGD offers a low-cost alternative that provides acceptable performance without significant side effects and cost impact.…”
