6. Translating Theory

Jacob Edmond

Abstract: This essay asserts the generally neglected importance of poetic theory in the study and practice of translation and of comparative and world literature, as a crucial complement to the overwhelming focus on the form/content binary. Theory not only travels but translates as well, as the essay argues through a case study of how Russian Formalism found its way into Bei Dao's translations of Boris Pasternak.
