6% Mo Austenitic Stainless Steel Selection for Offshore Applications

Abstract

6% Mo austenitic stainless steels are lncreasingly being used in the offshore industry as a construction material for handling seawater and hydrocarbon/seawater mixtures containing hydrogen SUlfide.The paper descri bes the speCl fi c investigations conducted on the various components relates to the Saga Snorre project for their corrosion and metallurgical characteristics.Over 1,000 tons of seamless/welded pipes, forgings, large radius induction bends, and various fittings were manufactured and tested. Corrosion behavl0r under hydrogen charging condition and chlori nated seawater were also studied. The paper discusses suitability of the alloy for conditions prevailing in the Snorre field of Saga Petroleum, at approximately 150 Km off the Norwegian coast.
