6-Benzylaminopurine treatment induces increased pubescence on wheat leaves

Abstract: The epidermis of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) leaves contains trichomes that contribute to resistance to insect pests and drought tolerance. In the present study, we examined the effects of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment on trichome development on the leaves of wheat cv. Norin 61 seedlings. Without phytohormone treatment, trichomes on the adaxial leaf surface were short (90 lm) and their density was low (3.6 trichomes/mm 2 ). Both BA and MeJA treatments significantly increased t… Show more

“…It is well known that phytohormones control leaf hair development. In wheat, cytokinin and jasmonate (JA) increase the density of leaf hairs, and cytokinin also increases hair length (Kobayashi et al 2012 ). In rhodes grass ( Chloris gayana Kunth), JA increases the density of macro-hairs and affects trichome initiation (Kobayashi et al 2010 ).…”

“…Phyto hormones such as gibberellin (GA), cytokinin (CK), salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), brassinolide (BR), and ethylene are also involved in the growth and development of trichomes on the leaf surface (Inthima et al 2017;Traw and Bergelson 2003;Xia et al 2018;Xiao et al 2017;Zhou et al 2013). For example, wheat density of hairs is controlled by cytokinin and jasmonic acid (Kobayashi et al 2012).…”

“…To analyze the ploidy in endosperm sections, images were examined based on the modified procedures for trichome nuclei (Kobayashi et al, 2012;Maes et al, 2008). Images captured with a CCD camera were converted to grayscale using Photoshop Elements 12 (Adobe Systems, San Jose, CA, USA), and analyzed using ImageJ 1.44p (National Institutes of Health, USA; http://imagej.nih.gov/ ij/).…”
