Mobile networks are facing an unprecedented demand for high-speed connectivity originating from novel mobile applications and services and, in general, from the adoption curve of mobile devices. However, coping with the service requirements imposed by current and future applications and services is very difficult since mobile networks are becoming progressively more heterogeneous and more complex. In this context, a promising approach is the adoption of novel network automation solutions and, in particular, of zero-touch management techniques. In this work, we refer to zero-touch management as a fully autonomous network management solution with human oversight. This survey sits at the crossroad between zero-touch management and mobile and wireless network research, effectively bridging a gap in terms of literature review between the two domains. In this paper, we first provide a taxonomy of network management solutions. We then discuss the relevant state-of-the-art on autonomous mobile networks. The concept of zero-touch management and the associated standardization efforts are then introduced. The survey continues with a review of the most important technological enablers for zero-touch management. The network automation solutions from the RAN to the core network, including end-toend aspects such as security, are then surveyed. Finally, we close this article with the current challenges and research directions.

networks have a potential to accelerate power system transition to a flexible, softwarized, data-driven, and intelligent grid. With their evolving support for Machine Learning (ML)/Artificial Intelligence (AI) functions, 5G networks are expected to enable novel data-centric Smart Grid (SG) services. In this paper, we explore how data-driven SG services could be integrated with ML/AI-enabled 5G networks in a symbiotic relationship. We focus on the State Estimation (SE) function as a key element of the energy management system and focus on two main questions. Firstly, in a tutorial fashion, we present an overview on how distributed SE can be integrated with the elements of the 5G core network and radio access network architecture. Secondly, we present and compare two powerful distributed SE methods based on: i) graphical models and belief propagation, and ii) graph neural networks. We discuss their performance and capability to support a near real-time distributed SE via 5G network, taking into account communication delays.

Recently, 5G networks have gradually surrounded our living environments to color our everyday lives and make our daily activities more convenient than before. However, in 5G networks, packet P transmitted from local UPFA of a 5G network, e.g., 5G-A, to UPFB in P’s destination 5G network, e.g., 5G-B, is not secure, even not encrypted, particularly via the Internet, A ≠ B. This conducts a risk of data leakage along the connection established between UPFA and UPFB. To solve this problem, in this study, we propose an architecture that encrypts/decrypts P to prevent it from being attacked. P is encrypted by an edge computer, e.g., ECA in 5G-A before it is sent to its destination, and decrypted by another edge computer, e.g., ECB in 5G-B. In this paper, the scenario includes data transmission between two users or among n-party users, n > 2. For the former, the cryptography systems used are symmetric and asymmetric encryption/decryption approaches. For the n-party scheme, we adopt Initial Key Agreement (IKA) mechanism which employs Upflow and Downflow processes to establish a secret key for all participating ECs. Besides, message authentication code, and time stamp are also utilized to enhance the security level of data transmission. Our analyses show that this proposed approach can effectively avoid some types of attacks.
