5G Communication Systems and Connected Healthcare

Abstract: This chapter focuses on 5G mobile systems for ultra-reliable low latency communications applied to two specific healthcare use cases: Wireless Tele Surgery (WTS), using a mobile console and a robotic platform with video, audio and haptic feedback; and Wireless Service Robot (WSR), a companion robot or service robot performing tasks of social caretakers, professional personnel or family members. Cyber-sickness and latency between the robotic platform and a reasoning server are the new technical problems the 5G … Show more

“…Devices can switch between several network types without having to reauthenticate thanks to the adoption of a universal authentication scheme. 5G utilises a Subscription Concealed Identifier (SUCI) during authentication to enhance network security and prevent the transfer of unencrypted data [64,65]. However, the complexity and shortcomings of 5G could lead to security issues.…”

“…A critical shortcoming for telesurgery has been the lag of signal transmission. High-speed wireless connections, including 5G networks, have overcome this problem (49), allowing teleoperated surgical systems, such as the da Vinci surgical system, to become more feasible, therefore safely performing procedures from a distance (50)(51)(52).…”
