Abstract: In this work we report results related to hydrogen evolution and absorption, on AISI 1045 steel and AISI 1045 steel modified by Sn electrodeposition, in 1 M NaOH. The simulation of experimental impedance, steady-state j=E data and electrochemical permeation data in terms of the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism coupled to H absorption and diffusion, allowed the estimation of kinetic and transport parameters leading to an appropriate interpretation of diminished H absorption on Sn modified samples.

“…In one case the variables X and h will increase and in the other will decrease with negative overpotential as is shown in the case of permeation experiments with steel membranes in Ref. [20]. Nevertheless, this cannot be known from The aim of the present paper is to determine all the possible solutions giving the same input output response in terms of current/potential experiments.…”

“…However, it is surprising that only minor attention has been devoted to cathodic reactions of pure tin [9][10][11]. Tin appears to have high hydrogen overpotential and exhibits low permeability for hydrogen [12,13]. As a result, tin does not promote corrosion of the base metal when the base metal is exposed locally to corroding media [14].…”

“…In such reference there are two sets of identified parameters for the Volmer-Heyrovsky route, one leads to h near to zero and the other one to h near to one, both sets are indistinguishable by potential/current measurements. Permeation data [4] indicate that the true mechanism corresponds to k 0 1 > k 0 2 , this was the set chosen for the state estimation procedure presented. They are k 0…”

“…These processes are related to the operation of hydrogen storage materials in rechargeable batteries such as Ni/metal hydride (MH) [1][2][3]. They are also related to the ingress of H into ferrous alloys, which is a major cause of embrittlement and damage coupled to metallic corrosion in many technological processes [4]. In both cases, the mechanism for hydrogen evolution and adsorption may be described by the Volmer-HeyrovskyTafel scheme coupled to subsequent absorption and diffusion of H atoms into the metallic substrate [5][6][7].…”
