PurposeThis study provides a systematic review of the literature within the manufacturing strategy (MS) domain focusing on the congruence aspect of different strategic functions to determine the state-of-the-art research progression and the trend of publications.Design/methodology/approachWe have adopted a five-stage review methodology consisting - 1) Article Identification; 2) Inclusion/Exclusion; 3) Review of the Articles; 4) Literature Analysis; 5) Future research directions. 121 articles focusing on congruence aspects and specific to the MS domain are identified and reviewed. Bibliometric analysis comprising keyword co-occurrence using a VOSviewer© software, and citation analysis is performed. Further, content analysis is carried out to categorize articles based on the type of research methodology, type of tool/method used, and aspects considered for congruence study.FindingsBased on the research gaps identified in the existing literature on the congruence aspect within the MS domain, this study offers future research directions. Majorly, the work found is an empirical survey. Literature scants to develop a framework that helps to quantify the congruence between two strategic functions.Research limitations/implicationsThis study facilitates researchers and practitioners to understand the congruence between different strategic aspects studied in the literature and the level of fit between them. Further, the identified research directions can encourage researchers and practitioners to conceive novel approaches to conduct future works on congruence theme.Originality/valueThe unicity of the current review lies in its theme, i.e. congruence aspect within MS. To the best of author's knowledge, no comparable study is observed to review the congruence aspect in any other domain.

PurposeThis paper examines the relationship between different manufacturing strategies and Industry 4.0's (I4.0) critical success factors (CSFs) and technology adoption.Design/methodology/approachFor that, the authors surveyed 165 practitioners from different manufacturers. Participants provided information about the levels of product customization and production volume in their companies. They also indicated the adoption level of I4.0 technologies and CSFs. Using multivariate data techniques, the authors identified four clusters of different manufacturing strategies and two readiness levels based on the establishment of I4.0 CSFs. The adoption level of I4.0 technologies was then cross compared among clusters to identify which technologies are more likely to be supported.FindingsThe findings indicate that, in low-readiness companies, the adoption level of I4.0 technologies does not significantly differ between manufacturing strategies. However, when companies present a higher I4.0 readiness, the adoption of I4.0 technologies seem to vary according to the existing manufacturing strategy.Originality/valueThis study sheds light on the influence that manufacturing strategies may have on the digital transformation of companies, highlighting which strategies are more likely to offer a context to successfully adopt I4.0 technologies. The identification of these relationships helps to define the expectation regarding the company's digital transformation, determining coherent benchmarks and allowing managers to anticipate potential issues.

While the literature commonly prevails a positive outlook on how Industry 4.0 (I4.0) enhances sustainability, there exists an understudied aspect—the darker side of I4.0—that has negative implications and has not yet been systematically addressed. This research aims to challenge the assumption of a sustainable I4.0 by highlighting the potential negative implications of I4.0 technologies on sustainability, emphasising potential measures to mitigate such effects, and presenting a framework for a sustainable future. A dual research methodology was used to conduct this research work. The systematic literature review (SLR) method was used to synthesise the literature. Additionally, a questionnaire was sent to 34 manufacturing Small and Medium‐Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to measure their current progress towards triple‐bottom‐line (TBL) sustainability. This SLR navigates through the complex multifaceted nature of the dark side of I4.0, including job displacement, wage disparity, cybersecurity risks, socio‐economic disparities, and environmental effects. This study presents a structured five‐step approach that emphasises the integration of cutting‐edge I4.0 technologies with a focus on sustainable development practices to address economic, environmental, and social issues for a sustainable I4.0 future. This article aimed to understand I4.0 as a whole phenomenon from the perspective of TBL sustainability. The originality of this research article lies in uncovering the hitherto less‐understudied negative aspects of I4.0 and presenting a complex interpretation of I4.0 and its impact on TBL sustainability.
