500 m.y. of thermal history elucidated by multi-method detrital thermochronology of North Gondwana Cambrian sandstone (Eilat area, Israel)

Abstract: Following the Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny, the Arabian-Nubian Shield of North Africa and Arabia was eroded and then covered by Cambrian sandstones that record the onset of platform sedimentation. We applied K-feldspar 40 Ar/ 39 Ar, zircon and apatite fi ssion-track, and apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronology to detritus from Cambrian sandstones of southern Israel deposited at ca. 500 Ma. U-Pb detrital zircon ages from these sandstones predate deposition and record the earlier Neoproterozoic crustal evolutio… Show more

“…For example, crystallization or cooling ages of detrital minerals in a basin can be used to determine provenance (e.g., Adams and Kelley, 1998;Baldwin et al, 1986;Barbieri et al, 2003;Carrapa et al, 2006;Clift et al, 2006;Glotzbach et al, 2011;Gray and Zeitler, 1997;Hurford and Carter, 1991;Hurford et al, 1984;Kalsbeek et al, 2000;Kelley and Bluck, 1992;Kosler et al, 2002;Reiners et al, 2005;Spiegel et al, 2007;Vermeesch et al, 2009;von Eynatten et al, 1996;Watt and Thrane, 2001). By comparing depositional ages with the cooling ages for detrital minerals, the timescales for erosion and transport in orogenic settings can be ascertained (Brandon and Vance, 1992;Bullen et al, 2001;Cerveny et al, 1988;Copeland and Harrison, 1990;Corrigan and Crowley, 1992;Garver and Brandon, 1994;van der Beek et al, 2006van der Beek et al, , 2010.…”

“…The data obtained by Vermeesch et al . [] on Cambrian sandstone from southern Israel reinforce this interpretation. First of all, they got similar ZFT age (380 Ma), but they also notice that this age coincides with existing Rb‐Sr age from authigenic clays (365–381 Ma).…”

“…The Zenifm Formation, including the sea-marginal facies, has been locally pierced by dikes and sills that should be younger than 0.58 Ga. At present, Late Neoproterozoic igneous activity younger than 0.57-0.58 Ga is hardly documented from NE Africa and Arabia using U-Pb zircon (Vermeech et al, 2009;Morag et al, 2012). Younger ages were obtained by various workers using other geochronological methods which may be subjected to resetting and therefore do not always reflect rock crystallization.…”
