Abstract:Zinc is present throughout the body in low concentration, but in most tissues. It performs multiple critical functions and must be supplied at adequate levels consistently or deficiency states will result, from mild to severe. Zinc deficiency is insufficient zinc to meet the needs of biological organisms. Due to its essentiality, a lack of this trace element leads to far more severe and widespread problems. Enzymes are large biological molecules responsible for the thousands of chemical inter-conversions that sustain life. Enzymes are usually very specific as to which reactions they catalyze and the substrates that are involved in these reactions. Complementary shape, charge and hydrophilic/ hydrophobic characteristics of enzymes and substrates are responsible for this specificity. Specimens were collected at the University Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology "Queen Geraldine" in Tirana, Albania during a period of time from year 2011 to 2013. We took into consideration 500 cases of pregnant women from first to third trimester of pregnancy. Serum zinc was measured by using Photometry (End-Point) method, whereas zinc enzymes such as Alkaline Phosphatase, Amylase, Gamma-glutamyl Transpeptidase, Lactate Dehydrogenase, Creatine Kinase, Aspartate Amino-Transferase, Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase, Lipase measured with the corresponding methods: Beckman Synchron LX20, Colorimetric ab102523 kit, GenWays GGT kit, nonradioactive colorimetric LDH kit, Max Discovery, Colorimetric kit, Abcam kit and Biovision kit. From 500 cases taken into consideration, 190 pregnant women (38%) had normal zinc values (70 -120 mcg/dl) 58 pregnant women (11.6%) had zinc levels between 60 -69.9 mcg/dl, patients which were identified as pregnant women with zinc deficiency, as a consequence of oral contraceptive use; 252 pregnant women (50.4%) with zinc values < 60 mcg/dl, identified as patients with zinc deficiency, a result of malnutrition and also urinary elimination of digestive liquids; 56 pregnant women (11.2%) with zinc values < 30 mcg/dl, identified as patient with definite deficiency as a result of different diseases like acrodermatitis enteropathica ect. According to these results, there was a positive correlation between zinc and enzymes such as ALP, CK and LDH in pregnant women suffering from hypertension, whereas a negative correlation of zinc to enzymes such GGT, AST and GPT in cases with anemia. Zinc prophylactic treatment is important before and during pregnancy. Without a proper nutritional requirement the person falls in the state of zinc deficiency.

This study was aimed to investigate liver function of Wistar rats influenced by oral ingestion of different doses of combination of benzoic and citric acids as food additives. Administered doses were (100, 500 and 1250 mg/kg b.w). Rats' serum GGT and ALP were used as an indicators. Forty four Wistar rats were divided into four groups' eleven rats in each group, six males and five females. One group was put as control, and the remainder of the three groups received different doses of combination of benzoic and citric acids. Housing in Meck Nimir research center Khartoum. They were recived free tab water and prepared food systems liberally. Serum was taken from each rats and analyzed by spectrophotometer. Transverse sections of liver organs were used to prepare Histopathiological slides. A significant (p ≤ 0.05) gradual increase according to increased treatment doses in serum GGT and alkaline phosphatase were observed in treated animals, compared with control. Also there were different signs of liver histopathological changes including plate hyperaemia, hemorhage, haemosiderosis,diffuse coagulative necrosis ,cytoplasmic vacuolation and sinusoidal dilatation. Change in nuclei. Compared to control all tested animals showed significant (p ≤ 0.05) inccreased body weight. All animals survived till the end of the experiment. We concluded that oral ingestion of combination of benzoic and citric acid causes liver malfunction, so it is preferred to ingest foods and beverages containing combination of benzoic and citric acid with caution. This study was aimed to investigate rats' liver malfunction induced by oral ingestion of combination of benzoic with citric acid in ratio (1:1/ v: v).

Background. Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) is a glycoprotein of the external surface of various cell types. The activity of GGT has been observed in cells and tissues with secretory activity, such as the proximal tubular cells in kidneys. GGT also plays an important pro-oxidant role, stimulating the generation of hydroxyl radicals, and increases membrane lipid peroxidation. Objectives. In this study we examined whether the monitoring of GGT activity in urine may be a prognostic factor of kidney allograft function. The study enrolled 107 Caucasian renal transplant recipients. Material and Methods. Urine samples were collected for GGT and creatinine analysis on the 1 st day after transplantation, and then in the 3 rd and 12 th month. Results. Higher urine GGT activity in the 3 rd month after transplantation was associated with significantly higher risk of graft failure (HR = 1.063 per each U/g creatinine; 95%Cl:1.004-1.127; p = 0.037) in the Cox proportional hazards model. Moreover, there were positive correlations between urine GGT and the grade of interstitial fibrosis (Rs = 0.64, p = 0.01) and tubular atrophy (Rs = 0.54, p = 0.056) in specimens collected in the 3 rd month after transplantation. Conclusions. Our results suggest that higher urine GGT activity in the 3 rd month after transplantation may be a prognostic factor of graft failure (Adv Clin Exp Med 2014, 23, 6, 947-952).
