5‐year randomized multicenter clinical trial on single dental implants placed in the midline of the edentulous mandible

Abstract: Objectives This multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted to investigate whether the loading protocol of single dental implants placed in the midline of edentulous mandibles will influence the implant survival or prosthetic maintenance. Materials and Methods In total, 158 patients were randomly assigned either to the immediate loading group (n = 81) or to the delayed loading group (n = 77). All implants were loaded with an overdenture retained by a ball attachment. Results After 5 years, 1… Show more

“…Installing a single implant in the midline of an edentulous mandible to retain an overdenture was introduced to make the treatment more cost-effective and less invasive [2]. Promising medium-to long-term survival rates have been reported with this treatment option [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…When mandibular ODs were retained by a single, immediately loaded implant, significantly lower implant survival rates relative to single implants with a delayed loading protocol were reported (Kern et al, 2021). However, implant survival rates in two‐implant retained, immediately loaded mandibular ODs are reported to be similar to those of early‐ or delayed‐loaded implants (Salman et al, 2019).…”

“…15 The single-implant retained mandibular overdenture is considered to be a cost-effective treatment option which proved medium-to long-term survival rates. [16][17][18][19] The choice of the attachment system for the implantretained overdentures was considered to be of great importance as it has an impact on the overall patient satisfaction and the clinical success. 20 A newly introduced attachment made from polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) which is a member of the polyaryletherketones (PAEKs), is currently in use.…”
