“…Demographic and clinical characteristics and CSF monoamine metabolites in depressed subjects with and without a history of alcoholism and healthy volunteers were compared using a general linear model. We compared CSF HVA in the two depressed groups controlling for sex, aggression, and depression (HDRS) scores, tobacco smoking, antisocial and borderline personality disorders, psychomotor retardation, and delusions because studies have suggested that these parameters may affect the CSF HVA content (Raleigh et al, 1992;Nordin et al, 1995;Seegal, 1985;Campanella et al, 1977;Lindstrom, 1985;Aberg-Wistedt et al, 1985;Houston et al, 1986;Almay et al, 1987;Jones et al, 1990;Faustman et al, 1991;Limson et al, 1991;Spiegel and King, 1992;Johnson et al, 1994;Soderstrom et al, 2001;Kapur and Mann, 1992;Brown and Gershon, 1993;Lykouras et al, 1994;van Praag et al, 1975;Post et al, 1973;Chotai et al, 1998;Daderman and Lidberg, 2002;Geracioti et al, 1999). Suicide attempt status was evaluated using the chisquared test.…”

“…The fact that the serotonin reuptake inhibitor clomi pramine had a more pronounced effect than the nor adrenaline reuptake inhibitor maprotiline is in line with the hypothesis and seems reasonable, taking into ac count the growing amount of knowledge concerning the importance of the serotoninergic systems in patients with idiopathic pain syndromes [Messing and Lytle, 1977;Basbaum and Fields, 1978;Almay et al, 1987;Almay, 1987]. It is also in line with results indicating that specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors as zimelidine [Johansson and von Knorring, 1979;Johansson et al, 1980], fluvoxamine [Ottevanger, 1987] and fluoxetin [Messing et al, 1975] are effective in the treatment of patients with chronic pain syndromes.…”

“…Disturbances in the serotoninergic systems have been discussed as an important factor in the etiology or patho genesis of affective disorders [Coppen, 1967;van Praag et al, 1973] and disturbances in the serotoninergic sys tems are also of great importance in the chronic pain syndromes [Messing and Lytle, 1977;Basbaum and Fields, 1978;Almay et al, 1987;Almay, 1987], Most antidepressants are effective as reuptake block ers of serotonin and/or noradrenaline [Maitre et al, 1980]. As concerns treatment of patients with depressive disorders, it has been difficult to demonstrate pro nounced differences between the antidepressants with different pharmacodynamic profile.…”

“…Autonomic disturbances included in the Brief Anxiety Scale (BSA), have been related to disturbances in the noradrenergic systems [57]. Impulsiveness [58], Aches and Pain [59] and Hostility [60] seem to be re lated to disturbances in the serotonergic systems. The Negative symptoms might be related to disturbances in the dopaminergic systems [34,61].…”
