The Adriatic-Balkan Network (ABN) was established in January 2012 as one of regional networks in the framework of International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) and its 10th Anniversary was concluded with 5th Regional Symposium on Landslides in Adriatic-Balkan Region (ReSyLAB) in Rijeka, Croatia, in March 2022. The Adriatic-Balkan Network was formally established during the 14th Serbian Symposium on Engineering Geology and Geotechnics in Belgrade in September 2012 based on the Proposal of the ICL Adriatic-Balkan Network that was approved at the 10th Anniversary Meeting of ICL held in Kyoto, Japan, in January 2012. The main outcome of the Adriatic-Balkan Network activity is organization of biannual Regional Symposiums on Landslides, organized in Zagreb, Croatia, 2013; Belgrade, Serbia, 2015; Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2017; Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2019; and the last one in Rijeka, Croatia in March 2022. In this paper, the establishment, objectives and activities of Adriatic-Balkan Network (ABN) within last ten years were presented as well as main outcomes of the 5th ReSyLAB held in Rijeka, Croatia, in March 2022.

Monitoring instrumentation plays a major role in the study of natural phenomena and analysis for risk prevention purposes, especially when facing the management of critical events. Within the geotechnical field, data collection has traditionally been performed with a manual approach characterized by time-expensive on-site investigations and monitoring devices activated by an operator. Due to these reasons, innovative instruments have been developed in recent years in order to provide a complete and more efficient system thanks to technological improvements. This paper aims to illustrate the advantages deriving from the application of a monitoring approach, named Internet of natural hazards, relying on the Internet of things principles applied to monitoring technologies. One of the main features of the system is the ability of automatic tools to acquire and elaborate data independently, which has led to the development of dedicated software and web-based visualization platforms for faster, more efficient and accessible data management. Additionally, automatic procedures play a key role in the implementation of early warning systems with a near-real-time approach, providing a valuable tool to the decision-makers and authorities responsible for emergency management. Moreover, the possibility of recording a large number of different parameters and physical quantities with high sampling frequency allows to perform meaningful statistical analyses and identify cause–effect relationships. A series of examples deriving from different case studies are reported in this paper in order to present the practical implications of the IoNH approach application to geotechnical monitoring.

Cyclic Behaviour of Uniform Sand in Drained and Undrained Conditions at Low Confining Stress in Small-Scale Landslide Model

Earthquakes are one of the main landslide-triggering factors. Earthquakes induce cyclic shear stresses and strains in soil and raise pore water pressure, degrading soil strength towards slope failure. Slopes on which shallow landslides can form due to geological conditions are most susceptible to such failures, mainly because of low confining stress. Effective confining stress has a significant role on soil response during static and cyclic loading. Under low confining stress, soil exhibits dilatant behaviour and can degrade rapidly under cyclic loading. This paper presents the results of undrained and drained cyclic triaxial tests on uniform sandy soil material used for modelling small-scale shallow landslides under 1g conditions. Based on the scaling laws for a model in 1g conditions, the frequencies of straining amplitudes for strain-controlled cyclic triaxial tests were defined. Undrained and drained cyclic triaxial tests on the type of sand used in small-scale landslide models were performed. The sandy samples had been previously consolidated at low confining stress corresponding to the values present in the shallow landslides used as the prototype. The influences of loading frequency and low confining stress on sand behaviour were investigated, and simple models for pore pressure build-up and volumetric strain on sand behaviour were proposed. These simple models can be used to estimate increasing pore water pressure and volumetric strain due to cyclic loading at low confining stress for frequencies lower than 1 Hz. The proposed models show good correlation with the data obtained in the laboratory test.
