Four-dimensional printing (4DP) is an approach of using Shape Memory Materials (SMMs) with additive manufacturing (AM) processes to produce printed parts that can deform over a determined amount of time. This research examines how Polylactic Acid (PLA), as a Shape Memory Polymer (SMP), can be programmed by manipulating the build parameters of material extrusion. In this research, a water bath experiment was used to show the results of the shape-recovery of bending and shape-recovery speed of the printed parts, according to the influence of the print pattern, infill density and recovery temperature (Tr). In terms of the influence of the print pattern, the ‘Quarter-cubic’ pattern with a 100% infill density showed the best recovery result; and the ‘Line’ pattern with a 20% infill density showed the worst recovery result. The ‘Cubic-subdivision’ pattern with a 20% infill density demonstrated the shortest recovery time; and the ‘Concentric’ pattern with a 100% infill density demonstrated the longest recovery time. The results also showed that a high temperature and high infill density provided better recovery, and a low temperature and low infill density resulted in poor recovery.

This review delves into four‐dimensional printing (4DP) through fused filament fabrication (FFF) and its implications for human‐material interaction (HMI). FFF 4DP’s emergence in HMI represents a nascent and evolving concept worthy of deeper exploration. The article introduces FFF 4DP’s fundamental principles, methodologies, materials, and associated benefits and challenges. Its primary focus is the intersection between FFF 4DP and HMI, investigating the potential of employing FFF 4D printed objects as interactive interfaces. Various HMI scenarios are examined, including applications in soft actuators, smart toys, household devices, smart consumer products, 4D textiles, and customizable wood‐based items. Moreover, the article discusses the current state‐of‐art and development in the field, highlighting notable projects that integrate FFF 4DP into HMI to advance environmental sustainability. It also identifies key challenges/limitations requiring attention for the widespread adoption of 4DP in HMI applications. This work offers an in‐depth analysis of FFF 4DP within the HMI context, underscoring its potential to transform human interactions with machines and smart devices. It introduces innovative features for dynamic and adaptable interfaces, promising to revolutionize user experiences. Morphing matter that change shapes and properties in response to external stimuli have gained significant interests in material science, robotics, biomedical engineering, wearables, architecture, and design. Along with functional advances, there is growing pressure and interest in considering the environmental impact of morphing matter during its life cycle. The unique manufacturing and usage of morphing matter means that existing sustainable design frameworks and principles for general physical products may not apply directly. For example, manufacturing morphing matter often requires designing and predicting materials' behaviors over time, and using devices fabricated with morphing matter often involves harnessing renewable energy and self‐reconfiguration, which pose unique sustainability opportunities and challenges. This study reflects and summarizes the field's practice in sustainable manufacturing, transport, use, and end‐of‐life handling of morphing matter. The term “sustainable morphing matter” (SMM) is coined, suggesting that sustainability‐conscious factors can become an integral component of morphing matter. In addition, ways to apply sustainability‐conscious factors to augment the existing design pipeline of morphing matter are presented, and more quantitative and algorithmic‐level developments are needed to apply these factors rigorously to the design process.
