4CaaSt: Comprehensive Management of Cloud Services through a PaaS

Abstract: Abstract-The 4CaaSt project aims at developing a PaaS framework that enables flexible definition, marketing, deployment and management of Cloud-based services and applications. The major innovations proposed by 4CaaSt are the blueprint and its lifecycle management, a one stop shop for Cloud services and a PaaS level resource management featuring elasticity. 4CaaSt also provides a portfolio of ready to use Cloud native services and Cloud-aware immigrant technologies. The necessary tools to monitor the execution… Show more

“…For this purpose, we created configurable Chef cookbooks consisting of recipes (scripts) to provide generic deployment plans for the middleware components. Following the 4CaaSt deployment approach [23], each cookbook provides four deployment recipes that are executed in the given order: 1) Deploy-PIC deploys the actual middleware component, also called "Platform Instance Component" (PIC) in 4CaaSt terminology. 2) Start-PIC starts the middleware component.…”

“…The marketplace solution proposed by [19]-4CaaSt marketplace-addresses contextualization of user's requests to some extent by enabling the modular composition of individual services across different providers. It is a marketplace for trading cloud services, which equally supports the supply and demand side in a transaction of service compositions regarding a wider and dynamic set of parameters (i.e., related to business goals, services level agreements (SLAs), etc.).…”

“…However, little attention is paid to scaling operations, which in cloud app with variable load peaks are used with high intensity. Ability of Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) to carry out both horizontal and vertical scaling also doesn't take into account [2].…”

“…Transition between the cloud app infrastructure states is possible via the scaling. There are two types of scaling: vertical (changing the type of virtual machine) and horizontal (changing the number of virtual machines) [2]. There are also mixed options for scaling, providing simultaneous execution of vertical and horizontal scaling.…”
