47.1: Invited Paper: Highly Robust Flexible AMOLED Display on Plastic Substrate with New Structure

Abstract: A new flexible TFT backplane structure with improved mechanical reliability has been fabricated on a plastic substrate using amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) thin film transistors. The panel withstood 10,000 bending cycles at a bending radius of 5 mm without any noticeable TFT degradation. After the bending test, change of V th , mobility, sub-threshold slope, and gate leakage current were only -0.10V, -0.11cm 2 /V-s, 0.01V/decade, and -1.03x10 -12 A, respectively. No line defects, dark spots, or b… Show more

“…However, an OLED display usually has several functional films apart from the OLED panel (see Figure ). The other methodology is placing the neutral plane around a weak layer of the OLED display, such as the thin‐film encapsulation (TFE) or thin‐film transistor (TFT) layer, using additional films . However, this solution must finely balance the functionality versus foldability trade‐off.…”

“…The AMOLED display contains functional brittle inorganic layers that have different purposes and could easily fail during bending. A number of literatures have pointed out that we can place the mechanically vulnerable components (TFT backplane and OLED) close to the zero‐strain plane (the neutral plane) to improve the reliability and flexibility of flexible displays . But, the inorganic layers used for encapsulation layers would be far away from neutral plane and easily fail during bending.…”
