463-MHz fundamental mode-locked fiber laser based on few-layer MoS_2 saturable absorber

Abstract: We report on the passive-mode-locking operation of a fiber laser with a fundamental repetition rate of 463 MHz based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS(2)) saturable absorber (SA). By embedding MoS(2) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin film, MoS(2)-PVA SA was prepared with a modulation depth of 2.7% and a saturation intensity of 137  MW/cm(2). The mode-locked fiber laser-employed MoS(2)-PVA SA was achieved with center wavelength of 1556.3 nm, 3-dB bandwidth of 6.1 nm, output power of 5.9 mW, and an extinction ratio o… Show more

“…In 2014, another group of researchers further revealed its broadband saturable absorption and applied it to fiber lasers, realizing soliton mode‐locking, as shown in Figure d–f. These efforts have greatly promoted the development of few‐layer MoS 2 in mode‐locked lasers and achieved a lot of important results . Similar to MoS 2 , layered WS 2 also has a direct bandgap and exhibits excellent nonlinear optical properties .…”

“…Timing jitter PSDs of both mode-locked oscillators and supercontinuum sources have been successfully measured with 2 × 10 −9  fs 2 /Hz noise floor (equivalent to −174 dBc/Hz phase noise floor at 10-GHz carrier), which is >25 dB lower than typical photodiode-based measurements19495051. Note that, although the noise floor is higher than the best optical cross-correlation method result, it is still comparable to typical performances of many optical cross-correlation measurements reported so far19525354.…”

“…It was noted that no PC was inserted into the cavity for stabilizing the pulse, unlike that in Ref. 100. Also, the pump threshold was much lower than the mode-locking EDFL based on MoS 2 -PVA SA.…”

“…Also, the pump threshold was much lower than the mode-locking EDFL based on MoS 2 -PVA SA. 100 This is because that the high reflection of narrowband FBG and WS 2 -SAM was beneficial to the rapid growth of cavity energy. As a fiber-integrated photonic device, this SAM also demonstrated well-thermal stability as the EDFLs worked at the maximum pump power.…”
