45.1: Invited Paper: Ultra‐thin and Flexible LSI Driver Mounted Electronic Paper Display using Quick‐Response Liquid‐Powder Technology

Abstract: The thin and flexible LSI driver with a thickness of less than 40μm for passive-matrix driven Quick-Response Liquid Powder Display (QR-LPD TM ) was successfully mounted onto the flexible printed circuit (FPC). The mounted LSI on the plastic substrate shows no significant degradation in the driving performances and keeps physical flexibility without any failures of connection. This technology can realize the fully flexible electronic paper in combination with a plastic substrate QR-LPD TM fabricated by roll-to-… Show more

“…4). In the previous studies, we have reported the preparation of flexible electronic papers composed of ITO-PET substrates with sheet-resistance of 200 Ω/□ and transmittance of 87.5% [6][7][8]. The conductive and optical properties of the PEDOT/PSS-film would be sufficient for displaying the electronic paper.…”

“…Flexible displays have attracted much attention toward the application for mobile display devices due to their thinness, light weight, and comfortable portability. Among the various types of electronic paper technologies [1][2][3][4][5], our display, quick-response liquid powder display (QR-LPD TM ), is one of the most suitable technology for flexible displays because of their reflective properties, wide viewing angle, and relatively simple panel structures [6][7][8]. Figure 1 shows the panel structure of the electronic paper.…”

“…Recently, electronic paper (e‐paper) such as electrophoretic display, liquid powder display and twisting‐ball display have attracted much attention for their thin, flexible, low‐cost and low‐energy features. For these e‐papers, memory effect (bistability) is a crucial characteristic.…”

“…Flexible displays have unique properties such as thinness, light weight, and comfortable portability, so that they are considered to be desirable information devices in future. Among the various kinds of the flat panel display technologies, electronic paper is more suitable to the flexible displays compared to the other types because it has some advantages about their reflective properties, wide viewing angle, and relatively simple panel structures [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. We have developed flexible electronic paper displays using quick response liquid powder technology [5][6][7].…”
