Low-oriented nylon-6 fibers were drawn in a multistage drawing process, during which the number of drawing steps and the temperature of each step were changed. The physical properties of these fibers were measured and compared with the values predicted by a multiple-linear-regression model. Moreover, six input variables and four output variables were used in an artificial neural network (ANN) to establish the logical relationships between the inputs and outputs. Attempts were also made to determine the effective parameters for each physical property and explain the observed trends. The results showed that the models based on the ANN performed well and provided stable responses in predicting combined interactions between independent variables. Keywords: drawing process, artificial neural network, modeling, physical properties Malo orientirana vlakna najlon 6 so bila vle~ena z ve~stopenjskim postopkom, pri~emer se je pri vsakem vleku spreminjala stopnja vle~enja in temperatura. Izmerjene vrednosti teh vlaken so bile primerjane z vrednostmi, napovedanimi z modelom multivariantne linearne regresije. Poleg tega je bilo v umetni nevronski mre`i (ANN) uporabljenih {est vhodnih spremenljivk in {tiri izhodne, da bi ugotovili logi~ne odvisnosti med vhodnimi in izhodnimi spremenljivkami. Posku{alo se je ugotoviti u~inkovite parametere za vsako fizikalno lastnost in razlo`iti opa`ene tendence. Rezultati so pokazali, da so modeli na osnovi ANN dobri in ponujajo stabilne odgovore pri predvidevanju kombiniranih interakcij neodvisnih spremenljivk. This article reports a study of multi-stage polypropylene fiber drawing (stretching) as a continuous, but independent stage of the overall fiber-forming process. The fibers were drawn according to a factorial experimental design, once appropriate spinning conditions had been devised. The structures of the drawn fibers were studied using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and birefringence measurements. In addition, the fibers were characterized with respect to filament tenacity, elongation to break, specific secant modulus, and extent of shrinkage at 130 C. All these properties were quantitatively assessed as responses to nine specially selected process control parameters in the drawing equipment. For every property analyzed, the temperatures of the hot plates in the draw frame were found to exert no significant influence, whereas the temperatures of the initial rollers were in most cases significant. Furthermore, the speed of the final roller also played an influential role, and a number of interactions between process parameters were identified as significant. Explanations are advanced for the parts played by significant process parameters on the properties of the drawn fibers. The article also demonstrates the advantages of factorial experimental design in determining correct settings for process parameters to give drawn fibers with the properties desired.

Taguchi's experimental design was employed in the melt spinning of molten mesophase pitch to produce carbon fibers. The textures of the obtained carbon fibers were radial with varied crack angles, as observed by scanning electron microscopy and polarized optical imaging. The diameter, crack angle, preferred orientation, and tensile modulus of the produced samples were examined to investigate the influence of four spinning variables. The relative importance of the variables has been emphasized for each characteristic. The results show that thicker carbon fiber can be obtained with a smaller entry angle, a higher spinning temperature, a reduced winding speed, and an increased extrusion pressure. The winding speed was found to be the most significant factor in relation to the fiber diameter. While it was observed that thicker carbon fiber generally shows improved preferred orientation, the most important variable affecting the preferred orientation was found to be the entry angle. As the entry angle decreased from 120° to 60°, the shear flow was enhanced to induce more ordered radial alignment of crystallite planes so as to obtain carbon fibers with a higher degree of preferred orientation. As a consequence, the crack angle was increased, and the tensile modulus was improved.
