40–45-µm lasing of Fe:ZnSe below 180 K, a new mid-infrared laser material

Abstract: Lasing of Fe:ZnSe is demonstrated, for the first time to the authors' knowledge, for temperatures ranging from 15 to 180 K. The output wavelength of the Fe:ZnSe laser was observed to tune with temperature from 3.98mum at 15 K to 4.54mum at 180 K. With an Er:YAG laser operating at 2.698mum as the pump source, a maximum energy per pulse of 12muJ at 130 K was produced. Laser slope efficiencies of 3.2% at 19 K and 8.2% at 150 K were determined for an output coupling of 0.6%. A laser emission linewidth of 0.007mum … Show more

“…As in the isotope-ratio measurements (see Sect. 4.3), we implemented 6 Calculated spectra of methylamines (MMA, DMA and TMA) according to the PNNL database [58] at ppb concentrations, in presence of 3% H 2 O and 5% CO 2 [59]. In contrast to the near-IR region, no interferences are occurring as the inset indicates FIGURE 7 Wide scan of a mixture of 24 ppm DMA and 20 ppm TMA diluted in a nitrogen flow at 950 mbar total pressure with the cw-DFG system.…”

“…Solid state lasers with emissions exceeding 3 µm are rare. For example, a fiber-laser pumped Cr 2+ :ZnSe laser exhibits a broad tuning range from 2.2 to 3.1 µm [5] at a cw power of 1 W, or a Fe 2+ :ZnSe laser emitting between 3.9 and 4.5 µm [6] are mentioned here. While the first device operates at room temperature, the latter needs cryogenic cooling and only runs in pulsed mode.…”

“…The efficient lasing was demonstrated on transitions in the ions of Cr 2+ :ZnS [1,2], Cr 2+ :ZnSe [1,2], Cr 2+ :CdSe [3], Cr 2+ :CdMnTe [4]. The lasing with ZnSe:Fe crystal grown by Bridgman method was also reported [5]. However the energy slope efficiency was only 8.2%.…”

“…The uniformity of doped crystals was high enough. The concentration of doping impurity was determined from optical absorption measurements using the data on the absorption cross-section given in [1,5]. It changed twice at most along the crystal diameter of 40-50 mm and height of 7-15 mm.…”

“…Легирование ZnSe ионами переходных металлов (Cr, Fe, Co) открывает перспективу создания пе-рестраиваемых лазеров для спектрального диапазона 2-5 мкм. Создание таких лазеров особенно важно для разработки высокочувствительных методов спектрального анализа, поскольку в данной области длин волн лежат сильные линии поглощения многих молекул [6,7]. В основном используются легированные кристаллы, полученные либо из расплава, либо путем твердофазной диффузии атомов переходных ме-таллов через поверхность.…”
