The electron transfer spectra of the hexachloro-and hexabromoniobate(V), and -tantalate(V) anions are investigated with particular care to avoid hydrolysis products. New interpretations are given, and the optical electronegativities x of Nb(V) and Ta(V) are recalculated. The difference between both x values is 0.2, in better agreement with the differences observed for metals of the second and third transition series. 1.Introduction. -During the past few years a series of papers have been published by our group dealing with the NMR. study of the structure, the relative stability and the kinetic behaviour of adducts of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) halides with Lewis bases2). Preliminary to a study of the charge transfer spectra of these compounds we consider it necessary to reinvestigate the hexahalides of niobium(V) and tantalum(V). The published data [Z-41 for these compounds are not consistent in reason of their great sensitivity to humidity.

Summary. The vertical 'lone-pair' ionization potentials I v ( n ) of fifteen 4-substituted quinuclidines, of aza-adamantane and of aza-twistane havc becn detcrmincd by photoelectron spectroscopy. It is shown that the dcpendcnce of Iv(n) on the nature of the substituent S can be rationalizcd in terms of the contribution t o the local potential at the ionization site (i.e. the nitrogen centre) by the dipole of S. Both the solution pK's and Iv(n) correlate with classical substituent parameters ( e . g. o* or F ) and with each other. However, no conclusions can be drawn from such regressions concerning a close relationship bctxvcen thc electronic mcchanisrns responsible for thc observed changes in p K or Iv(n). [5]. Versuche zur quantitativen Erfassung polarer Substituenteneffekte bei organischen Reaktionen durch ,,induktive Substituentenkonstanten" griinden auf der Annahme, daD diese Effekte von der Art der beobachteten Reaktion unabhangig seien. Wie Messungen der Geschwindigkeitskonstanten von nucleophilen Substitutionsreaktionen zeigen, gilt diese Annahme auch bei gesattigten Molekiilen nur bedingt. Sie versagt, wenn der Substituent ein Elektronendonor, das Reaktionszentrum ein Elektronenacceptor ist und beide iiber a-Bindungen hyperkonjugiert sind. lm Extremfall kann die Polarisierung zu heterolytischer Fragmentierung fuhren. Einf&rungDie iibliche Beschreibung organischer Verbindungen mit Symbolen wie ROH, RCHO oder RCOOH impliziert, daD chemische Veranderungen an den funktionellen Gruppen, hier also an der Hydroxyl-, Formyl-bzw. Carboxylgruppe stattfinden, der Rest des Molekiils sich dagegen nicht beteiligt.
