The adsorption and inhibition effects of three benzimidazole derivatives (BDD), namely: 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (PBD), 2-bromo-1H-benzimidazole (BrBD), and 2-chlorobenzimidazole (ClBD) on mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl have been studied by electrochemical and weight loss methods. Results showed that inhibition efficiency increases with concentration and maximum value was obtained at 5·10 -3 M concentration. From the results, it is concluded that the BDD inhibited mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl by adsorbing on the metal surface. Polarization results showed that the BDD act as mixed type inhibitors. The adsorption of BDD onto the mild steel surface was described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

The inhibition efficiency of 1,5-Diaminonaphthalene (1,5DNA) compound was studied by itself as well as in a mixture that included sodium chloride (NaCl), noted [1.5DNA][Cl − ], for mild steel in 0.5 M sulfuric acid. Gravimetric, electrochemical techniques and computational chemistry calculations were utilized for the assessment of corrosion inhibition efficiency and explanation of the mechanism involved during the corrosion inhibition process. The results show that inhibition efficiencies on mild steel increase with increase in concentration of the inhibitor and enhancement in inhibition efficiency was observed on addition of sodium chloride due to synergism. This inhibition has been attributed to the stabilization of adsorbed inhibitor film and, consequently, increasing its inhibitive properties. The [1.5DNA][Cl − ] acts as mixed type inhibitor and the Nyquist curves show that with the increase in the concentration, the charge transfer resistance R ct increased. In addition, [1.5DNA][Cl − ] obeyed Langmuir monolayer adsorption isotherm. Moreover, Molecular Dynamic Simulations and DFT calculations showed that [1.5DNA][Cl − ] owned a higher adsorption ability.

Alkaloids are naturally occurring nitrogen containing organic bases that possess diverse and significant physiological effects on animals and humans. They are mostly derived from the plants. Because of their natural and biological origin, they (alkaloids) are considered as environmental benign alternatives to be used as corrosion inhibitors at the place of traditional and toxic synthetic corrosion inhibitors. Numerous alkaloids have been employed as effective corrosion inhibitors for metals and alloys in different electrolytic media. It has been established that alkaloid molecules are associated with extensive conjugation in the form of non-bonding and π-elections through which they can interact strongly and inhibit corrosion efficiently. Present review article features the collection of reports published on the topic alkaloids as corrosion inhibitors. In this review article, we also described the corrosion and its adverse effect, mechanism of corrosion and corrosion inhibition by organic corrosion inhibitors (including alkaloids) and factors affecting the inhibition property of corrosion inhibitors. Literature study suggests that most of the alkaloids are soluble in the polar electrolytic media and thereby behave as good corrosion inhibitors. Present review article describes the inhibition effect of several classes of alkaloids such as pyridine, purine and indole derivatives that have been used previously. Chemical structures alkaloids and their mode of adsorption and interactions with the metallic surface, nature of metal and electrolyte and related salient features have also been tabulated in the review.
