4fnfdoubly excited autoionizing series in barium

Abstract: In a two-step pulsed-laser atomic-beam experiment we have studied doubly exicted 4fn f series of barium with energy of -11 eV above the atomic ground state (6s ) and 6 eV above the first ionization limit (6s). Starting from Sd~'F3, 'G4 metastable states, 4f,~, n'f J=2-6 (9& n'&46) states and 4f7&&n "f J=3-6 (n"=19, 20, 21, 25, and 40) states were excited using intermediate Sdnf autoionizing Rydberg states. The 4f,~2n'f J=2-6 states strongly interact with 4f7~2n "f J=2-6 (g~n " &20) and7pn"'f J=2-5 (6&n"'&10) s… Show more

“…In LS-coupling, the lowest member of the 4fnf Rydberg series corresponds to the 4f' configuration for L + S even and to the 4f5f one for L + S odd. To determine unambiguously the n-value of the 4fnf Rydberg levels observed by de Graaff et al (1991) it is necessary to follow each Rydberg series from its bottom end up to n28, therefore predictions on the 4fnf J=4, 5 and 6 levels with 5 < n < 8 are desirable. Because these levels lie above the bottom energy end of the involved channels, the energy dependence of the MQDT parameters is expected to be less significant for the intermediate 4fnf levels than for the 4f2 ones.…”

“…The increase in the number of open channels increases the dimensionality of the space spanned by open channels and is accompanied by an increase in the indirect coupling paths, making it easy to interfere destructively. Numerous spectra in which complete destruction of indirect coupling takes place were reported (Xu et al 1986, De Graaff et al 1992. Besides the introduction of interference between indirect couplings, the incoherent process of background nature adds up to the perturbation due to an interloper.…”

“…Hence the transitions of the ionic core are nearly undisturbed by the presence of the Rydberg electron. This forms the basis of the well-known method of isolated-core excitation (ICE) [1,2] (see also Fig. 1), which can be conveniently used to create and study doubly excited atomic states.…”
