4,4′-, 5,5′-, and 6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridyls: The structures, phase transitions, vibrations, and methyl group tunneling of their complexes with chloranilic acid

Abstract: The crystal and molecular structures of 4,4(')- and 6,6(')-dimethyl-2,2(')-bipyridyl complexes with 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-p-benzoquinone (chloranilic acid, CLA) have been determined and compared with those of the complex with the 5,5(')-derivative, which is known to possess interesting antiferroelectric properties. In the crystalline state, all three compounds form hydrogen bonded chains with N(+)-H···O(-) and O-H···N bridges on both sides of the bipyridyl constituent. The comparison of three derivatives … Show more

“…The schematic crystal structure at room temperature is shown in Figure 1(a), where alternating O-H···N and N-H···O hydrogen bonds form a one-dimensional chain along the b-axis. 23 We note that the positional order of the protons We note that the crystal-growth temperature of this material is room temperature, which is well within the ferroelectric phase. Thus, the as-grown ferroelectric domain structure can be dominated by the crystal-growth kinetics.…”

“…regarding 6,6′‐dimethyl‐2,2′‐bipyridinium chloranilate [H‐66dmbp][Hca] (Figure 1). 6 This compound, which has the longest hydrogen bond length among organic ferroelectric supramolecules, was firstly reported by Bator et al 7. A spontaneous polarization P s of 7–8 μC cm −2 was about half of that of croconic acid (ca.…”
