4.1: Distinguished Paper: Cavity Shape Control of the Roll‐to‐Roll Fabricated Novel Microstructure Film for Improving the Viewing‐Angle Characteristics of LCDs

Abstract: A microstructure film with many micro cavities positioned behind small black dots has been developed for improving LCD viewingangle characteristics. The micro cavities are fabricated by the selfalignment photolithography of the transparent photoresist using the black dots as photo masks. The cavity shapes are optimized by controlling the photolithography conditions.

“…Recently, Sharp demonstrated a reflecting type DF with tapered micro-cavities fabricated by roll-to-roll process [46], [47]. To reduce ambient reflection, they applied a black matrix on top of the diffuser that covers the area where lights are not extracted from LCs, so that the ambient contrast ratio is increased.…”

“…We proposed the microstructure film as shown in Figure 2 [10][11][12]. This microstructure film has a plate-like transparent polymer, and the black dots are randomly arranged on the base film for the prevention of moiré between the black dots pattern and the pixel matrix.…”

“…However, there are problems that the blur of the front image occurs, and that the contrast ratio under a bright ambient light reduces. We solved the problems of the third approach, and developed a microstructure film to achieve ultra-wide viewing TN-LCD [10][11][12].…”

“…The third approach was to attach a diffusing film to the surface of LCD, which caused a blur in the frontal image and degraded a contrast ratio under the bright ambient light owing to its backscattering . Therefore, we have developed a new microstructure film to solve these issues by just attaching it to the surface of TN‐LCD …”

“…[8][9][10] Therefore, we have developed a new microstructure film to solve these issues by just attaching it to the surface of TN-LCD. [11][12][13][14][15] In addition, the improvement effect of viewing angle characteristics of the microstructure film is not limited to the TN-LCD. We have applied this technology to multidomain vertical alignment (MVA)-LCD.…”
