3R TaS2 Surpasses the Corresponding 1T and 2H Phases for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract: We prepared new two-dimensional 3R TaS2 nanomaterials and investigated their application in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acidic condition for the first time. The partial orientation aligned 3R TaS2 nanosheets show excellent electrocatalytic performance toward HER and outperform the corresponding 1T and 2H TaS2. Benefiting from the broken inversion symmetry and large exposed edge sites, the obtained 3R TaS2 nanomaterial exhibits optimized electrocatalytic activity for HER with onset overpotential as … Show more

“…To enrich our understanding of the 2D TMDs, other related materials should also be investigated. For example, TaS 2 , [ 146,233 ] NbS 2 , [ 136,234 ] and VS 2 , [ 235,236 ] all show their potential for electrochemical hydrogen generation. Therefore, searching for new types of TMDs‐based materials with favorable characteristics such as cost effectiveness, high efficiency, good durability, and pH‐independence, is essential for the future industrial water splitting application.…”

“…The Ta 5+ peaks disappeared in Figure c, implying no detectable oxidation inside the foil. The Ta 4+ peaks should be assigned to TaS 2 . Small peaks of Ta 3+ , were also detected, locating at 24.3 and 22.3 eV, which could be assigned to TaN bonding .…”

“…To obtain the valence change information, we performed X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements with a small step length of 0.05 eV on the TaS 2 powder and hybrid foil. As shown in Figure b, the Ta 4+ peaks should be assigned to TaS 2 . Because the surface of the TaS 2 powder is easily oxidized, strong peaks of Ta 5+ assigned to Ta 2 O 5 were observed in Figure b.…”

“…In particular, the figure suggests that the decoration/doping of metal/hetroatom over the base materials will enhance the catalytic reaction for specific gases and form the charge accumulation depletion region to improve the sensing performances.
