3D XCT Mesostructure Characterization and Image-Based Discrete Element (DE) Modelling of Failure Patterns in Coal Gangue Particles (CGPs)

Abstract: The paper presents an application of milli- and micro-XCT to mesostructure characterization of CGPs and failure patterns analysis using dynamic impact simulations. In this study, XCT scanning experiments are firstly conducted on CGPs, followed by a series of image analyses with qualitative results. Then, the 3D mesomorphological parameters and internal composition of individual particles are quantitatively characterized. Finally, dynamic impact loading in y-axis direction is modelled to investigate the 3D meso… Show more

“…The auxiliary installation device for rock bolt drilling In the 20th century, Cundall et al [12][13][14] proposed the discrete element method (DEM), and simulated the conveying performance of screw conveyor for the first time through DEM. Nowadays, DEM has become the main application method for simulating screw conveying, and it is also widely used in geotechnical field, [15][16][17] mining field, [18][19][20] chemical field, [21][22][23] and agricultural field. [24][25][26] With the continuous improvement and development of the DEM, it has been widely used in the field of bit research to construct different drilling environments through DEM, and then analyze the particle movement in the drilling process.…”

“…Due to the non-destructive nature of X-ray CT imaging, repeated scans of the same sample after an intervention such as loading [ 11 , 16 , 49 , 56 ] or heating [ 3 ] are possible and allow for time-lapse (4D) studies of changes in the assembly [ 53 ]. The digital data, collected with each scan, can feed directly into computed models about the particles and their behaviour in the granular assembly [ 27 , 47 , 48 , 54 ]. “…Subsequently, DEM simulation had an application in the field of screw conveying to investigate conveying performance and bulk material conveying [17][18][19][20]. In addition, the DEM was also popular and widely utilized in other fields, such as in the chemical industry [21,22], pneumatic conveying [23][24][25], and rock cutting and crushing [26][27][28][29][30]. Moreover, DEM had been applied in the field of coal shearing [31,32].…”
