3D WKB solution for fast magnetoacoustic wave behaviour within a separatrix dome containing a coronal null point

Abstract: The propagation of the fast magnetoacoustic wave is studied within a magnetic topology containing a 3D coronal null point whose fan field lines form a dome. The topology is constructed from a magnetic dipole embedded within a global uniform field. This study aims to improve the understanding of how magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) waves propagate through inhomogeneous media, specifically in a medium containing an isolated 3D magnetic null point. We consider the linearized MHD equations for an inhomogeneous, ideal, c… Show more

“…Next, we try to find the effect of the nonlinear perturbation on the temperature profile. In previous studies, it was shown that the propagation of the fast magnetoacoustic pulse around the null point results in the excitation of the current sheet around the null point (McLaughlin et al 2019;Sabri et al 2019. Moreover, it was illustrated that the magnetic null point collapsed to form a current sheet oscillating between ±∼45°.…”

“…Another further step into the 3D realm has already been taken by McLaughlin et al (2019), who performed a 3D WKB study of fast wave refraction in a 3D dome topology. They could not address mode conversion due to their cold plasma approximation, by they did determine that the ability of a null to directly capture wave energy decreases as the null height increases above the photosphere.…”

“…These new results have drawn renewed interest in wave-heating mechanisms, both observationally and theoretically. Combinations of MHD wave aspects, vortices, and null point ingredients have only been studied to a certain extent (McLaughlin et al 2011(McLaughlin et al , 2019Thurgood & McLaughlin 2013;Shelyag et al 2013;Mumford et al 2015;Tarr et al 2017;Tarr & Linton 2019;Liu et al 2019;Tziotziou et al 2020;Battaglia et al 2021). Because vortex flows, resulting torsional Alfvén waves, and localized null points are so common, their co-occurrence is quite likely, opening up new challenges in the study of wave and energy propagation.…”
