3D reconstruction of salt movements within the deepest post-Permian structure of the Central European Basin System - the Glueckstadt Graben

Abstract: The Glueckstadt Graben is prominent structure of the Central European Basin System, where the sedimentary patterns are extensively affected by Permian salt movements. The relations of the sedimentary patterns to salt structures have been analyzed through present-day distributions of sediments. In addition, a three-dimensional backward modelling approach has been applied to determine the original salt distribution in response to the unloading due to sequential backstripping of the Cretaceous when the area of th… Show more

“…This 3D model was finally adjusted by using the results from seismic interpretation. The reflection seismic profiles (located in Fig.2) were interpreted down to the Zechstein (Maystrenko et al, 2005(Maystrenko et al, , 2006. Therefore, the geologic identification of the different stratigraphic units along the studied profile is also well established (Fig.…”

“…In addition to wells and seismic data, structural maps were provided by the Federal Department of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR; Baldschuhn et al, 1996) which cover the area under consideration. The digital version of depth maps from the Geotectonic Atlas of NW Germany ) was integrated into a three-dimensional structural model by Maystrenko et al (2005Maystrenko et al ( , 2006). This 3D model was finally adjusted by using the results from seismic interpretation.…”

“…The Glueckstadt Graben was not essentially inverted during the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary when reverse faults and flexures developed along the EFS in the south. In the Glueckstadt Graben, the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary compression caused increased salt activity (Kockel 2002;Maystrenko et al 2006). In the Cenozoic, a depocentre developed within the central North Sea (Ziegler 1990;Scheck-Wenderoth and Lamarche 2005).…”
