3D Printed Hollow Microneedles for Treating Skin Wrinkles Using Different Anti-Wrinkle Agents: A Possible Futuristic Approach

Abstract: Skin wrinkles are an inevitable phenomenon that is brought about by aging due to the degradation of scleroprotein fibers and significant collagen reduction, which is the fundamental basis of anti-wrinkle technology in use today. Conventional treatments such as lasering and Botulinum toxin have some drawbacks including allergic skin reactions, cumbersome treatment procedures, and inefficient penetration of the anti-wrinkle products into the skin due to the high resistance of stratum corneum. Bearing this in min… Show more

“…The research studies by Kapoor et al [58], Rauso et al [59], Hernandez et al [60], and Islam et al [61] also address different aspects of skin aging and the aesthetic approaches used for facial rejuvenation, adding evidence that HA and botulinum toxin are safe and effective options in dentistry for facial rejuvenation, thus supporting the abovementioned findings. These fillers can fill wrinkles, increase skin hydration, improve elasticity, and provide a more youthful and balanced appearance.…”

“…Specifically, this technique can help in printing skin delivery platforms such as patches and microneedles [29]. Printed cosmetic microneedles can be a delivery system for both hydrophilic and lipophilic active ingredients that will be introduced into the material during the L-FDM process [30]. According to scientific research, the use of 3D printing allows for the customization of dressings to fit the specific needs of each patient.…”

“…Microneedles have attracted substantial interest across diverse domains, including cosmetics [2,3], drug delivery systems (DDS) [4,5], and biological sensing for disease diagnosis [6,7]. For example, the cosmetics industry is leveraging microneedle technology to treat skin wrinkles and is developing several solid and dissolvable microneedle-based products incorporating anti-wrinkle formulations [8,9]. In the pharmaceutical industry, the development of dissolvable microneedle patches for insulin [10,11] and vaccines [12] is expected.…”
