3D Morphometric Evaluation of Craniofacial Features in Adult Subjects with Marfan Syndrome

Abstract: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a hereditable disorder of the connective tissue with an estimated worldwide prevalence of 1:5000, mainly caused by alterations of the extracellular matrix protein fibrillin-1. Cardiovascular manifestations of MFS, including aortic dilation with increased risk of dissection and rupture, are the leading cause of mortality. Therefore, an early and accurate diagnosis of MFS is crucial to prevent the development of complications, even if it may be difficult, due to the variable expression o… Show more

“…The reproducibility and accuracy of the data collection procedures were verified (De Menezes et al, ). To confirm and extend the results of previous preliminary studies (Dolci et al, ), a subset of five selected midline landmarks and six paired landmarks were considered in this study (Fig. , Table ).…”

“…In previous preliminary studies on young and adult subjects with MFS using stereophotogrammetry, some morphometric abnormalities concerning the face and its parts were identified (Dolci et al, ). In this study, we focused on adults, extending the investigation to more patients and anthropometric measurements to confirm previous results and to improve our definition of the facial morphological features associated with MFS.…”

“…It has already been applied to morphometric analysis of the face, and it has been suggested as a future instrument for early recognition of the syndromes (Dem sar et al, 2013;Goodwin et al, 2014). Moreover, morphometric analysis has already been proposed as a valid instrument to address other syndromes that have wide clinical manifestations or require early diagnosis (Goodwin et al, 2014;Dolci et al, 2016).…”

“…The aim of this study is to perform a 3 D stereophotogrammetric assessment of the Glut1‐DS facial phenotype to quantify facial shape and size variations through multivariate statistical techniques (Bhuiyan et al, ; Goodwin et al, ; De Giorgis et al, ; Dolci et al, ).…”
