For a reinforced concrete column to behave in a ductile manner without much loss on strength requires sufficient confinement to the concrete core. One way to provide confinement to the concrete core is to use external confining devices such as a series of thin-walled circular steel sheet tube to confine the concrete. This type of external confining device falls off on the categories of Steel Tube Confined Concrete (STCC). With the presence of a gap between the steel sheet, the buckling on the tube due to high axial stresses can be avoided. On the other hand, STCC also offers great advantages to strengthen a non-code conforming reinforced concrete column to achieve better resistance to withstand earthquake load. From the numerical analysis point of view, the important task to successfully model the STCC specimen lies in the modeling of the interface behavior between concrete and steel tube. For that purpose, in this paper, the 3D-NLFEA package is used to study the response of STCC. The analysis result is further compared with the available test results in the literature. From the analysis, the predicted response is excellent. Detailed discussion on the parameter of the interface behavior between concrete and steel tube is presented.

The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets as external confinement is becoming popular, especially in seismic areas, because of its ability to enhance the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete to perform as a sustainable symmetric structural member. Therefore, various researchers have worked out for the prediction of strength and strain models of FRP-confined concrete. This study presents the improved strain models for the FRP confined cylindrical concrete members. Different previously proposed models of axial strain of FRP-confined concrete were evaluated based on a large database of 678 specimens from previous experiments and an improved model was proposed using the general regression analysis technique. Furthermore, the proposed model was validated using the previous experimental work of FRP-wrapped concrete cylinders and their finite elements analysis (FEA) using the ABAQUS software. The accuracy of the proposed strain model was quite satisfactory in comparison with the previous experimental and FEA results of the present study. Moreover, the proposed empirical strain model was used for the parametric study to investigate the effect of different geometric and material parameters such as the compressive strength of unconfined concrete, diameter of the cylinder, elastic modulus and thickness of the FRP layers, on the axial strain of FRP-wrapped cylinders. A close agreement among the proposed strain models and experimental outputs was observed. This study will help in understanding the behavior of sustainable FRP-confined symmetric concrete members.

During an earthquake, Reinforced Concrete (RC) building structures should behave in a ductile manner to prevent the structures from collapse. Therefore, the column element should have sufficient ductility to sustain an axial load at the post-peak region. Ductility of the RC column can be sufficiently provided by confinement to the RC column core. Therefore, in this paper, ductility of square RC columns made of NSC and HSSCR are analyzed using three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis (3D-NLFEA) with various ties configurations. In total, 12 specimens for each transverse steel rebar configuration were examined. The measurement used for ductility comparisons is the I10 index (AS 3600-2018) which is compared with the concept of ductility available in the literature (for example ACI 318-14). The study found that the computed minimum transverse steel rebar diameter based on ACI 318-14 showed larger diameter than the AS 3600:2018. From the 3DNLFEA analysis found that using a confining rebar higher than 700 MPa with the same volumetric ratio shows lower ductility for the Type I RC column configuration.
