3D Exoscope System in Neurosurgery—Comparison of a Standard Operating Microscope With a New 3D Exoscope in the Cadaver Lab

Abstract: BACKGROUND For decades, the operating microscope has been the “gold standard” visualization device in neurosurgery. The development of endoscopy revolutionized different surgical disciplines, whereas in neurosurgery, the endoscope is commonly used as an additional device more than as single visualization tool. Invention of a 3D exoscope system opens new possibilities in visualization and ergonomics in neurosurgery. OBJECTIVE … Show more

“…Technological advances have broadened the available visualization options, with the microscope, endoscope, and exoscope all possessing specific benefits and disadvantages. This additional component must be assimilated into the surgical decision-making process (Jane, 2013;Belykh et al, 2018;Herlan et al, 2019). Only through quantitative anatomical assessment specific to these surgical parameters can neurosurgeons increase their insight and proficiency in neurosurgical techniques and operative interventions.…”

“…In recent years, the surgical armamentarium has been enriched with high-definition 4 K endoscope 56 as well as exoscope 57 systems, which potentially provide a wide viewing angle as well as high-resolution image quality available with an endoscope with an optic resolution power equal or superior to the conventional Operating Microscope (OM) 57 . In particular, the exoscope is a new surgical tool recently conceived in order to overcome some limitations of OM and endoscope.…”

“…The published literature reveals the increased interest in the application of exoscopic visualization in neurosurgery, with the vast majority of articles being published within the last two years [46,48,49,[51][52][53][54][55] . Thanks to literature contributions, it became possible to analyze the advantages and limitations of Vitom-3D.…”
