3d City Model as a First Step Towards Digital Twin of Sofia City

Abstract: Abstract. Semantic 3D city models are increasingly applied for a wide range of analysis and simulations of large urban areas. Such models are used as a foundation for development of city digital twins, representing with high accuracy the landscapes and urban areas as well as dynamic of the city in terms of processes and events. In this context, this paper presents a 3D city model, which is a starting point for development of digital twin of Sofia city. The 3D model is compliant with CityGML 2.0 in LOD1, suppor… Show more

“…Experimental workflows are developed considering the whole process of the 3D city modeling in detail. Dimitrov and Petrova-Antonova [10] propose a workflow starting from preparing 2D data to the generation of a CityGML model and finally visualizing it in a web application. The Novi Sad project provides a detailed description of 3D city model generation, including LIDAR data acquisition, 3D processing, and web-based visualization [11].…”

“…Since visual communication plays a fundamental role in the circulation of information, after this phase, the work was directed towards the creation of a city model. Under the constant evolutionary thrust of technology, city models constitute an extremely incisive and easy-to-understand element for the transmission of information and knowledge relating to the city [46], its history, and the events that interest or have involved it in the past [47,48]. Historical city models have assumed the role of tools for the knowledge and conservation of urban cultural heritage, configuring themselves as containers of histories that are usually written and difficult to analyze [6].…”

“…By simulating and analyzing complex systems, digital twins can provide new insights into their operation and maintenance and improve the quality and efficiency of applications for Industry 4.0 [ 4 ]. Numerous works have applied digital twins, for example, in the creation of the digital twin of a city as a foundation for analyzing the dynamics of the city in terms of processes and events [ 5 ], for a better understanding of urban drainage networks [ 6 ], and in space exploration satellites to check the operability of modules [ 7 ]. For this work, we used the most sophisticated example of a digital twin application in the aircraft maintenance industry since aircraft is one of the most complex machines that consist of millions of parts and complex assemblies [ 8 , 9 ].…”
