3D city models integrate heterogeneous urban data from multiple sources in a unified geospatial representation, combining both semantics and geometry. Although in past decades they have predominantly been used for visualization, today they are used in a large range of tasks related to exploration, analysis, and management across multiple domains. The complexity of urban processes and the diversity of urban environments bring challenges to the implementation of 3D city models. To address such challenges, this paper presents the development process of a 3D city model of a single neighborhood in the city of Sofia based on the CityGML 2.0 standard. The model represents the buildings in LOD1, focusing on CityGML features, including building parts, the terrain intersection curve, and the address. Similar building models of 18 cities provided as open datasets are explored and compared to extract good modeling practices. As a result, workflows for the generation of 3D building models in LOD1 are elaborated on and improvements in the feature modeling are proposed. Two building model options are examined: (1) the modeling of a building as a single solid with differentiated rooftops and (2) the modeling of a building with separate building parts. The developed 3D building model contains 471 buildings and 198 addresses in both cases of building parts modeling. In addition, the terrain intersection curve (TIC) is modeled and a method for removing the duplicating TIC features is applied. Consequently, the overall count of vertices of the TIC is lowered from 12,112 to 8042. Finally, the possibilities for visualization of the model in popular platforms such as ArcGIS Pro and Cesium Ion are explored.

The use of historical maps in a digital environment can give considerable support to the study of the history of cities. It allows you to combine information from different sources, processed according to different geomatic techniques, to provide a reconstruction of urban configurations of the past and their comparison with iconographic and textual documentation of the same period. The aim of the research is to try to make the knowledge of a historical event easily accessible by converging within a simple model the various sources on which the reconstruction itself is based. This paper deals with the reconstruction of the ephemeral architecture created for Napoleon’s visit to Venice through the generation of 3D virtual models. The reconstruction was approached through a rigorous method, inserting these models into the context for which they were conceived. The generation of the historical city model, taking advantage of the algorithms of structure from motion applied to photogrammetry, made it possible to compare it with what was shown by the old paintings depicting the event. Virtual models processed within the GIS environment have been uploaded online thanks to the use of WebGIS. We chose to share the research results on the internet to allow users to avail themselves of a space that no longer exists from within it, going beyond the pictorial images of the past, overcoming communication through rendering and videos. The simultaneous application of methods and techniques related to the various components of geomatics within the digital environment has enabled the operation of a faithful reconstruction of reality, bringing to light past urban scenarios that no longer exist and are only known through paintings.

Digital twins have revolutionized manufacturing and maintenance, allowing us to interact with virtual yet realistic representations of the physical world in simulations to identify potential problems or opportunities for improvement. However, traditional digital twins do not have the ability to communicate with humans using natural language, which limits their potential usefulness. Although conventional natural language processing methods have proven to be effective in solving certain tasks, neuro-symbolic AI offers a new approach that leads to more robust and versatile solutions. In this paper, we propose neuro-symbolic reasoning (NSR)—a fundamental method for interacting with 3D digital twins using natural language. The method understands user requests and contexts to manipulate 3D components of digital twins and is able to read maintenance manuals and implement installations and removal procedures autonomously. A practical neuro-symbolic dataset of machine-understandable manuals, 3D models, and user queries is collected to train the neuro-symbolic reasoning interaction mechanism. The evaluation demonstrates that NSR can execute user commands accurately, achieving 96.2% accuracy on test data. The proposed method has industrial importance since it provides the technology to perform maintenance procedures, request information from manuals, and serve as a tool to interact with complex virtual machinery using natural language.
