3D architectures of single-crystalline complex oxides

Abstract: We proposed 3D architectures of complex oxides as a way to derive novel properties: various 3D shapes were formed by self-shaped free-standing membranes, and curvature-induced polarization in an otherwise nonpolar material was observed.

“…The outof-plane parameter b of the film is aligned with the anatase [001] crystallographic orientation and was measured here to be 9.454 Å, in good agreement with the corresponding parameter of the anatase unit cell, which is due to the very low lattice mismatch between substrate and film (0.1%) [72]. This low mismatch is further confirmed by the value for the in-plane parameter a of the film, which has been found to be very close to the value for LaAlO 3 of 3.787 Å [62]. The excellent match between the two crystals in their present orientation is also reflected in the measured value for γ of almost exactly 90°.…”

“…The data was acquired with a Gatan CCD camera with a resolution of 1024 × 1024 pixel using the Gatan Microscopy Suite (GMS, v. 1.4). Spot positions of the SAED pattern were extracted using LEEDLab [57], scaling was carried out using a correction matrix determined from the reflexes associated with LaAlO 3 with the unit cell size taken from the literature [61,62].…”

“…To develop freestanding form of LAO/STO, careful consideration of lattice symmetry, growth thermodynamics, and etchant selectivity for the sacrificial layer and membrane material is required. Our approach to releasing LAO/STO from its oxide substrate here is to insert a sacrificial SrRuO 3 (SRO) layer between pulsed laser deposition (PLD)–grown LAO/STO film and oxide substrates ( 28 ). Since the heterointerface property of LAO/STO highly depends on the quality of STO, synthesizing high-quality STO/SRO templates is crucial for this study.…”

“…Limitations in the choice of available substrates further restrict the degree of strain engineering. Additionally, the substrate clamping effect makes the creation of 3D architectures of such functional materials less feasible, raising the question of how to overcome these limitations. One way to address these limitations is by separating the film from the substrate.…”
