3bij3 – Developing a framework for researching recommender systems and their effects

Abstract: Today’s online news environment is increasingly characterized by personalized news selections, relying on algorithmic solutions for extracting relevant articles and composing an individual’s news diet. Yet, the impact of such recommendation algorithms on how we consume and perceive news is still understudied. We therefore developed one of the first software solutions to conduct studies on effects of news recommender systems in a realistic setting. The web app of our framework (called 3bij3) displays real-time… Show more

“…Unlike much passive "television-era" theorizing, consumers and media companies are now in a kind of interplay. Beyond media "cultivation," this new interplay could be thought of as a kind of mutual cultivation: Producers and consumers now exhibit much more co-construction of the social reality through real-time engagement and experimentation in Internet and social media (Beer, 2009;Loecherbach & Trilling, 2020;Rieder, Matamoros-Fernández, & Coromina, 2018;Varian, 2014;Valkenburg et al, 2016). Some researchers have sought to revise and extend traditional theories in this new context, asserting their continued relevance (Morgan et al, 2015).…”

“…In the reality of news companies, it is challenging to measure satisfaction with the recommendation beyond the actual click (Bodó, 2019) as additional user surveys are required. In communication research, it is in turn dif-ficult to simulate realistic article recommendation and study recommendations as to the interaction between algorithms and the user (Loecherbach & Trilling, 2020). Data on user views of real recommendations are accordingly scarce in academia: most are derived from hypothetical instructions.…”

“…To answer the research questions, a platform for testing an interactive news recommender system for a longer period of time is used [16]. It is based on an open-source Python application and presents the user with a web interface showing a selection of nine different news articles in tiles arranged in a 3x3 grid.…”

“…For each article, the title and a short teaser are shown, additionally the topic is indicated with a colored tag. For more information on the interface and setup of the website, a detailed description can be found in [16]. The news are retrieved from several RSS feeds of different Dutch news providers (similar to strategies employed in [24]).…”
