The performance of Scenedesmus sp. in the phycoremediation of domestic secondary effluents and the high-quality production of the effluents for safe disposal are investigated in the current work. An indigenous strain of Scenedesmus sp. is obtained from a sludge thickness basin at a wastewater treatment plant. The characteristics of this microalgae are identified using a molecular analysis based on 18S ribosomal RNA sequences. The phycoremediation process is conducted in a photoreactor tank (5 L) with five different concentrations of Scenedesmus sp. (between 10 5 and 10 6 cells mL À1 ). The reactors are then placed outdoors (exposed to natural environmental conditions) for 8 days. The Scenedesmus sp. had the ability to remove 91.86%, 98.15%, and 93.11% of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and total organic carbon (TOC), respectively, and reduce biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solid (TSS) by 86.5%, 69.9%, and 76%, respectively, at a concentration of 10 6 cells mL À1 . Moreover, the increase in the pH value during microalgae activity contributed to the increases in nutrients and characteristics percentage removal. The treated secondary effluents generated from the phycoremediation process after 8 days met the EQA 1974 (Regulation 2009) sewage sludge (standard A) in terms of TN and TP but is still not under the permissible limits for BOD, COD, and TSS. In conclusion, an indigenous Scenedesmus sp. is efficient in enhancing the quality of secondary wastewater to meet the standards required for reuse or safe disposal.

This study investigated the symbiotic structure relationship between mixed algae andactivated sludge while treating high-load printing and dyeing wastewater under natural light. Theeffects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) (12 h, 16 h and 20 h) and aeration rate (0.1–0.15, 0.4–0.5and 0.7–0.8 L/min) on algal–bacterial symbiosis (ABS) and conventional activated sludge (CAS)systems. Experimental results showed that the ABS system exhibited the best removal performancefor chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and total phosphorus (TP),which was increased by 12.5%, 23.1% and 10.5%, respectively, and reduced colour 80 timescompared with the printing and dyeing wastewater treatment plant. Algae growth could bepromoted under lower dissolved oxygen (DO), and the addition of algae could provide more DO tothe ABS system. The particle size distribution of sludge in the ABS system was stable, whichguaranteed a stable treatment effect. In addition, the COD and colour could be further degradedunder the conditions of no external carbon source and longer HRT. It is expected that the presentstudy will provide a foundation for the practical application of the ABS system, and new insightsfor the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater.

Diffusion of the biofuels (BF) using is justified by opening up the opportunities for obtaining fuel and energy from previously inaccessible sources and by the existence of energy-deficient regions, in particular in Russia. Works of different scientists on the problems of creating and using BF were the methodological basis of this study. Information on the state and prospects of the development of renewable energy sources in Russian regions was collected from regulatory documents and was obtained by employing a questionnaire survey. For the study of the collected materials, the different methods of comparative analysis, and the methods of expert assessments were used. The results of the Status-Quo analysis of BF production in Russia have shown that the creation of BF performed relatively successfully. However, there are many more perspectives, connected with expanding the utilization of the different raw materials. Also, the analysis of organizational and economic mechanisms applied for production of BF and the obtained data on several organizations-producers allowed for proposing six indexes for the assessment of the BF production effectiveness. It is suggested that BF production in Russia will contribute to the sustainable development of a number of the country's regions in the near future.Energies 2019, 12, 3948 2 of 30 impact of permanent anthropogenic factors has required the taking of appropriate measures in this field both at the federal and regional levels. In particular, the accumulation of industrial, agricultural, and household wastes is becoming an essential incentive for the development of innovative activities aiming at the production of biofuel (BF). According to the existing data [3], the resource potential of recyclable organic waste biomass, including solid household wastes and sediments of wastewaters reaches 13,490.26 tons of coal equivalent (TCE) per year in Russia. This study led both at the federal level and in particular regions which have significant differences in terms of economic, geographic, and climatic conditions. According to pessimistic forecasts, the share of green energy in the Russian economy will arrive at 3-5% by 2035, according to positive ones, it will be equal to 8-10%. The proposed share of BF in the production of electric and heat energy with targeted management could be about 2-3% [4].Different geographic, climatic, economic, and other conditions in regions of Russia necessitate solving several scientific problems for optimization of the existing regional programs for the provision of sustainable development and determination of the role of REn and BF production in them.Therefore, the progress in BF production achieved in some leading countries has become a significant factor which causes a positive impact on the sustainable development of their economies.
