Abstract: This meta-analysis demonstrates a wide variability of the association between occupational asbestos and lung cancer. There was a suggestion of an association between asbestos and laryngeal carcinoma and no clear association with other cancers.

“…Goodman et al (1999) conducted a meta-analysis of 69 asbestos-exposed cohorts (including a subset of the Libby cohort), and found a meta-SMR for lung cancer of 1.6 (95% CI, 1.6–1.7) after allowing for 10 years cancer latency. Honda et al (2002) evaluated mortality among tremolite-exposed talc miners and millers, reporting an SMR of 2.2 (95% CI, 1.5–3.2) for nonmalignant respiratory disease, similar to the SMR of 2.4 (95% CI, 2.0–2.9) reported here among tremolite-exposed vermiculite workers.…”

“…Genetic susceptibility208 and infections209 have also been implicated, perhaps explaining the remarkable geographical variation of upper airway cancers, particularly nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Other relevant factors include diet and nutrition,210 and exposure to certain chemicals in the workplace (eg, asbestos211 and wood dust212). …”

“…There have been a large number of studies reporting on associations between asbestos exposure and stomach and other gastrointestinal tract cancers (Gamble, 2008;Goodman et al, 1999;IMNA, 2006). The risk estimates for both stomach and colorectal cancers vary but are generally modest.…”

“…Numerous studies have been carried out that show excess lung cancers related to asbestos exposure. Goodman et al (1999) reviewed 69 asbestos-exposed occupational cohorts carried out worldwide and in many different industries; a pooled analysis of 37 cohorts gave a pooled SMR for lung cancer of 1.48 (95% CI 1.44, 1.52).…”
