This article provides an overview of the structure of the Luxembourgish language, the national language of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which has developed from a Moselle Franconian dialect to an Ausbau language in the course of the 20th century. In the early 21st century, Luxembourgish serves several functions, mainly as a multifunctional spoken variety but also as a written language, which has acquired a medium level of language standardization. Because of the embedding into a complex multilingual situation with German and French, Luxembourgish is characterized by a high degree of language contact. As a Germanic language, Luxembourgish has developed its distinct grammatical features. In this article, the main aspects of phonetics and phonology (vowels, consonants, prosody, word stress), morphology (inflection of nouns, adjectives, articles and pronouns, partitive structures, prepositions, verbal system), and syntactic characteristics (complementizer agreement, word order in verbal clusters) are discussed. The lexicon is influenced to a certain degree by loanwords from French. Regarding language variation and change, recent surveys show that Luxembourgish is undergoing major changes affecting phonetics and phonology (reduction of regional pronunciations), the grammatical system (plural of nouns), and, especially, the lexical level (decrease of loans from French, increase of loans from German).

As the usage and spread of digital and online forms of communication have grown, so has their impact on the formation, implementation and dissemination of language standards and norms. The bulk of existing linguistic research on such technological developments has focused on 'bottom-up' practices, especially on how online literacies provide new spaces for a greater variety of writing practices and how digital domains enable policies 'from below' in the regulation of language usage. Other lines of enquiry have addressed the implications for agency with regard to both the increasing role of crowdsourcing for lexicographic purposes and the ease of becoming a popular authority on 'proper' language use through social media. Section 26.2 discusses the surge of scholarly interest in these areas, followed by a more specific look at how this is illustrated by the expansion of written Luxembourgish in digital and online spaces. The Luxembourgish language is a particularly interesting case in this respect because its orthography is undergoing another official revision, but it is debatable how aware Luxembourgish speakers are of the spelling norms. Both sides of this policy-practice spectrum are played out in online and digital spaces. Therefore, this chapter will complement the more established view 'from below' with fresh perspectives on the role of these technologies in the standardization process 'from above' by looking at actions from both the state institutions and private organizations in the top-down diffusion of this research was funded by the Multilingualism: empowering Individuals, transforming societies (MeIts) project, which is part of the AHRC open World Research Initiative (AH/n004671/1). Attitudes are a fundamental characteristic of human activity. Their main function is the situational assessment of phenomena in practice to maintain action ability and to provide orientation in social interaction. In sociolinguistics, research into attitudes toward varieties and their speakers is a central component of the analysis of linguistic and cultural dynamics. In recent years, computational linguistics has also shown an increased interest in the social conditionality of language. To date, such approaches have lacked a linguistically based theory of attitudes, which, for example, enables an exact terminological differentiation between publicly taken stances and the assumed underlying attitudes. Against this backdrop, the present study contributes to the connection of sociolinguistic and computational linguistic approaches to the analysis of language attitudes. We model a free text corpus of user comments from the RTL.lu news platform using representation learning (Word2Vec). In the aggregated data, we look for contextual similarities between vector representations of words that provide evidence of stances toward multilingualism in Luxembourg. We then contrast this data with the results of a quantitative attitudes study, which was carried out as part of the crowdsourcing project "Schnëssen." The combination of the different datasets enables the reconstruction of socially pertinent attitudes represented in public discourse. The results demonstrate the central importance of attitudes toward the different languages in Luxembourg for the cultural self-understanding of the population. We also introduce a tool for the automatic orthographic correction of Luxembourgish texts (spellux). In view of the ongoing standardization of Luxembourgish and a lack of rule knowledge in the population, orthographic variation-among other factors like code-switching or regional dialects-poses a great challenge for the automatic processing of text data. The correction tool enables the orthographic normalization of Luxembourgish texts and with that a consolidation of the vocabulary for the training of word embedding models.
