360-degree viewable image-plane disk-type multiplex holography by one-step recording

Abstract: By tilting both the input and the image planes of a holographic system and adopting a diverging reference wave for hologram recording, a special type of multiplex hologram can be produced in one-step. Due to symmetry of reconstruction geometry, the reconstructed 3D image from this type of rainbow hologram can be viewed by the surrounding observers simultaneously. Theoretical formulation for the holographic process is presented. Some numerical simulation and experimental result demonstrating the characteristics… Show more

“…According to the color dispersion phenomenon of reconstructed information observed from this kind of transmission hologram, which is also a rainbow-type hologram, as reported in Ref. 27, the final hologram has the capability of displaying rainbow images with a much wider vertical angular range than the reflection hologram. Although this multiplex hologram is designed for white-light source reconstruction with a specified viewing ring for the recording wavelength, however, a 3D image can be observed with a moderately wide vertical viewing angle, in which a red image can be observed at the inclination angle of approximately 48.7°, whereas a bright green image appears at 34.2°.…”

“…In order to display a 360°-viewable image for the observers around the disk-type multiplex hologram simultaneously, both the object plane and the recording film plane in the optical system should be rotated at suitable angles with respect to the optical axis. 27,28) In these two kinds of IPDTMHs, both the virtual image and real image can be generated. Generally, for the display condition of virtualimage generation, the object information for both 360°-viewable and normal-viewing-type images is recorded on the lower half of a disk.…”

“…By shifting the rotational axis of the recording film and also reversing the holographic recording sequence, this kind of hologram can be made to generate real image. [15][16][17] Referring to Fig. 2(a), holographic information of a developed IPDTMH then becomes from the upper half of the disk for 3D-image display.…”

“…14,15) Recently, we developed a 360 viewable IPDTMH which can be viewed by the surrounding observers simultaneously. 16,17) To overcome the problem of lower diffraction efficiency of multiple-exposure holograms, one may adopt holographic copying to obtain duplicated hologram with higher optical performance. In the holographic copying, two-step recording, including the formation of master hologram (H 1 ) and the production of transfer hologram (H 2 ), is used.…”

“…The disk-type multiplex hologram has the advantage of commercial mass production owing to the utilization of the well-developed CD technology. Recently, we developed a 360-degree-viewable IPDTMH by one-step recording [18] . In the current letter, we describe how to make a normal-view IPDTMH using a one-step process.…”
