36.2: The Lifetime and Pinholes in the External Electrode Fluorescent Lamps

Abstract: At the pressure range of 30~200 Torr in EEFLs, the lifetimes will be discussed to be about 60,000 hours in the long run operation of 11,000 hours. In the test of lamp failure, pinhole formation has been shown to be the insulation layer breakdown of glass in the dielectric barrier discharge of capacitive coupled EEFLs.

“…The CCFL, EEFL, and LED are the major light sources for LCD-TV backlights. 14 While LCD TV has less limitations in thickness than laptops and monitors, it requires high brightness. A parallel array consisting of many CCFLs or EEFLs is required to achieve a high brightness and high uniformity backlight having inverters and other components.…”

“…The cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) and the external electrode fluorescent lamp (EEFL) have been used as the major light sources for LCD backlights. [1,2] The conventional FFL as shown in Figure. 1 and Figure. 2 was also used as one of the light sources for thin backlight for LCD TV. [3,4] Most of the backlights developed include a number of sheets and plates for diffusion of light to get high uniformity of luminance from backlight due to the linear nature of light sources used.…”
