340,000-Year Centennial-Scale Marine Record of Southern Hemisphere Climatic Oscillation

Abstract: In order to investigate rapid climatic changes at mid-southern latitudes, we have developed centennial-scale paleoceanographic records from the southwest Pacific that enable detailed comparison with Antarctic ice core records. These records suggest close coupling of mid-southern latitudes with Antarctic climate during deglacial and interglacial periods. Glacial sections display higher variability than is seen in Antarctic ice cores, which implies climatic decoupling between mid- and high southern latitudes due… Show more

“…This is in general agreement with warm season temperature estimates based on radiolarian analyses. A recent study in the Southwest Pacific, also based on G. bulloides, suggests a LH-LGM SST temperature difference of 4.3 1C (Pahnke et al, 2003) which is comparable to alkenone results (3.5 1C) from a near by core (Sikes et al, 2002).…”

“…There are significant SST increases of 1-2 • C during Heinrich event 1 (H1) and the YD. Previous studies from the eastern equatorial and South Pacific reveal a mechanism characterized by early warming of South Pacific subtropical mode water (Pahnke et al, 2003;Lamy et al, 2004;Pena et al, 2008). This warm signal is transported along a gyre to the east equatorial Pacific (EEP) and eventually to the west Pacific through ocean tunneling (Pena et al, 2008;Qu et al, 2013, Fig.…”

“…Our Bayesian skyline plot (BSP) analysis is summarized in Figure 4 where it is temporally aligned with a graph summarizing two temperature proxies taken from Pahnke et al (2003). In Figure 4 we have used two x-axis scales, one using mutations per site per generation and the other using years before present, based on a mutation rate of 6.2 × 10 -8 mutations per site and two generations per year.…”
