Differential cytokine profiles in pediatric patients with PFAPA syndrome and recurrent tonsillitis

Abstract: Objective : An attempt was made to identify characteristic cytokine profiles to distinguish periodic fever with aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis syndrome (PFAPAS) from recurrent tonsillitis, of which clinical manifestations are similar to those of PFAPAS in children. Methods : Serum concentrations of IL-6, IL-4 and IFN-γ were measured during febrile episodes in pediatric patients. Results : The levels of IL-6 during febrile episodes were markedly increased above the upper limit of normal … Show more

“…[ 20 ] Moreover, compared to those with recurrent tonsillitis, PFAPA children exhibited elevated TH1 and reduced T helper 2 (TH2) cytokine levels during flare attacks, while the former group of patients were associated with elevated TH2 cytokine secretion only. [ 21 ] Similar oscillation in cytokine and chemokine levels, with increased production of proinflammatory mediators, was observed during afebrile phases,[ 22 ] which were also reported to display elevated tonsillar cluster of differentiation (CD)8+ T cell levels. [ 23 ] In contrast to the studies on the cellular branch of adaptive immunity, literature on antibody production in PFAPA subjects is still not consistent.…”
