A prospective cohort study of ambient air pollution exposure and risk of uterine leiomyomata

Abstract: STUDY QUESTION To what extent are ambient concentrations of particulate matter <2.5 microns (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) associated with risk of self-reported physician-diagnosed uterine leiomyomata (UL)? SUMMARY ANSWER In this large prospective cohort study of Black women, ambient concentrations of O3, but not PM2.5 or NO2, were associated with increased risk of UL. … Show more

“…However, those who had undergone hysterectomy were excluded because we were unable to ascertain whether their hysterectomy was due to UFs, as they were not specifically asked about the reasons for undergoing hysterectomy during the survey. We used the B-ultrasound diagnosis results to define UFs because numerous studies have demonstrated that ultrasound is the primary imaging examination method for UFs, offering high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing leiomyomas 13 25 26. During B-ultrasound examination, UFs typically appear as well-defined solid, concentric, hypoechoic masses that can cause varying degrees of acoustic shadowing.…”

“…A 2023 study by Pang et al [5 ▪ ] describes how ovarian reserve in women was negatively associated with exposure to air pollution. Surprisingly, women exposed to elevated levels of ozone (O 3 ) were more likely to develop uterine leiomyomata [6]. Although further research is still needed to confirm these findings and determine specifics about quantities and types of harmful pollutants, the current data clearly demonstrate that air pollution can result in serious negative impacts for women's reproductive health.…”

“…Blue clustering showed that men were more likely to suffer from digestive system cancers after exposure to PM 2.5 , such as liver cancer and colorectal cancer. Pink clustering showed that women were more likely to have female systemic cancers, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer [32][33][34]. From Figure 6B of time visualization, in recent years, some studies have begun to explore the association between PM 2.5 and urinary system cancers, such as bladder cancer and renal cancer, as well as the impact on the immune system, such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and the association with leukemia [12,35].…”
