Preliminary In Vitro Study of Fluoride Release from Selected Ormocer Materials

Abstract: The purpose of the in vitro study presented in this paper was to determine the long-term release of fluoride ions from selected ormocer materials (Admira (A), Admira Flow (AF), Admira Seal (AS)). The release of fluoride ions from these materials into a saline solution (0.9% NaCl) and deionized water was tested for 14 weeks. In a long-term study the measurements were taken after 1 and 3 h, then 1, 2, and 3 days and then at weekly intervals for 14 weeks. In a short-term study the measurements were made after 3, … Show more

“…According to Kosior et al [ 48 ], the greatest release of fluoride ions for the various materials tested occurred on days 49, 56, 70, and 77 of the study. On the other hand, Nigam et al [ 45 ] and Gui et al [ 49 ] observed that the release of fluorine ions was the greatest on the first day of the experiment, with the highest emission from glass ionomer cements and the lowest from composites.…”

“…The idea of fissure sealants is to form a physical barrier that stops the formation of the carious lesion [ 102 ]. They ensure a cariostatic effect for a long time [ 103 , 104 ]. It is worth paying attention to the positive aspect of the regular release of small amounts of fluoride ions, which have a significant impact on the prevention of caries [ 105 , 106 ].…”

“…Due to the benefits of the constant presence of fluoride in the oral cavity environment, it is recommended that hygiene products and dental materials should be enriched with its compounds. Thus, the products used in dentistry become a source of this element released into dental tissues and saliva [32][33][34][35][36]. Among other compounds, fluorapatites are utilized for such purposes.…”

“…Attempts have been made to analyze this issue after incorporating fluorapatite or hydroxyapatite into glass ionomer materials in deionized water environment [37,38]. The results obtained indicate a significant increase in the level of fluoride released from the material enriched with fluorapatite, with the highest level of release observed in the first days of the 4-week experiment [36]. However, it should be noted that the use of distilled water, even when heated to body temperature, does not reflect oral conditions.…”
