The Role of Resveratrol Administration in Human Obesity

Abstract: Obesity is a widespread disease that is associated with numerous and serious comorbidities. These include metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular-cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, cancer, and sexual and hormonal disorders. The treatment of obesity has therefore become a goal of great clinical and social relevance. Among the therapeutic strategies against obesity, resveratrol has aroused great interest. This polyphenol has anticancer and antioxidant propertie… Show more

“…Inhibitory effects of natural substances on adipogenesis or metabolic activity of adipose tissue were found for compounds belonging to diverse phytochemical classes, e.g., stilbenes and anthraquinones. The newest literature emphasizes a pleiotropic activity of resveratrol, including the modulation of gene expression and affecting diverse molecular targets such as AMPK, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor co-activator-1α (PGC-1α) as well as sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) deacetylase [ 90 ]. The anti-adipogenic effects of another stilbene, i.e., piceatannol, seem to be mainly targeted to early phases of development of adipose tissue.…”

“…Especially, resveratrol (3,5,4′‐trihydroxystilbene) is a well‐known main component of peanut sprouts (Seo et al, 2019). Although it has a low bioavailability, resveratrol is well tolerated and no adverse events were reported (Mongioì et al, 2021). Malaxinic acid is a phenolic acid compound identified as the active ingredient responsible for the antiobesity effect of pear extract (Truong et al, 2019).…”

“…Since then, several other properties were attributed to this substance, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as anti-lipid, anti-aging, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and neuroprotective actions [87]. Moreover, the administration of RSV seems to have a beneficial role in obesity by reducing body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and fat mass [88], as well as improving glucose homeostasis and attenuating the cardiovascular risk associated with obesity [87]. RSV regulates energy metabolism and mitochondrial activity, thus protecting against metabolic diseases [89].…”

“…RSV regulates energy metabolism and mitochondrial activity, thus protecting against metabolic diseases [89]. It stimulates SIRT1 deacetylase, which, in turn, inhibits adipogenesis and adipocyte differentiation [87]. The inhibition of adipogenesis may be mediated by SIRT1 directly or indirectly by increasing the expression of the Forkhead box protein O1 (FoxO1) [90].…”
