The Gut Microbiota and Traditional Chinese Medicine: A New Clinical Frontier on Cancer

Abstract: : Gut microbiota is a complex microecosystem which is called the second genome of the human body. Herbal medicine can balance tumor-suppressing bacteria and tumor-promoting bacteria and exert its anti-cancer effect by regulating gut microbiota. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a history of thousands of years in prevention and treatment of diseases in China. In recent decades, TCM show an obvious advantage in prolonging the survival time and improving the living quality of patients with cancer. Notably, g… Show more

“…Studies have shown that the cellular immune function of lung cancer patients is significantly inhibited [42], and the blood cd4/cd8 ratio of tumor patients is significantly lower than that of normal people, while the ratio of lung cancer lymph node metastasis group is significantly lower than that of non lymph node metastasis group. Many studies have shown that traditional Chinese medicine could adjust the immune system function of the body [43][44][45], so this is also one of the therapeutic goals we want to observe.…”

“…To our knowledge, the cause of AAD is commonly identified as intestinal flora disturbance [ 48 ]. As one of the oldest medical practices in human history, TCM has been widely used in diagnosing and treating diseases, which can improve the imbalance of intestinal flora [ 49 , 50 ]. By conducting a systematic review, Zheng et al [ 9 ] found that TCM can make an influence on modulating gut microbiota and improving glucose metabolisms in T2DM patients.…”

“…The concept of intestinal microbial homeostasis in gut microbiome is quite similar to the holistic health balance in TCM. Besides, the intestinal flora acts as a crucial medium in the medicinal effect of herbal medicine [37]. Thus, intestinal flora has become a new pathway to understand TCM.…”
