Objectives: Childhood experiences of intimate partner violence (CEIPV) remain a significant public health issue affecting millions of young people (YP) globally. Although CEIPV has been researched for decades, YP’s voices are often left unheard, their stories relegated to mere research data. Their CEIPV are usually told through adult proxy accounts rather than by YP themselves. Additionally, research shows that YP have limited opportunities to influence domestic violence policies and practices. This theoretical paper proposes a new YP engagement model for CEIPV research and practice. Methods: The model is based on a review of relevant literature, including lessons from the women’s shelter movement, child rights, narrative practice, trauma and violence-informed approaches, and selected case studies. Results: The Narrative Shelter Model integrates storytelling and storylistening to create a safe space for YP with CEIPV to exercise their voice and choice, and share their stories in a non-retraumatizing way. Moreover, the model invites the storylistener(s) to connect with YP’s stories to influence decision-making. Conclusion: The Narrative Shelter Model elicits a path towards creating safe and inclusive spaces for YP with CEIPV to share their stories and be heard as agents of social change. It aims not only to promote their voices but also to empower them to become young advocates and peer supporters in responding to IPV, thereby strengthening their resilience and recovery. The use of this model within domestic violence agencies can continue to position YP as experts in their own lives and pivotal agents in shaping knowledge and effective interventions.

Association of adolescent dating violence as victim or perpetrator with childhood maltreatmentBackground: Childhood maltreatment extends beyond this stage of development, impacting adolescence and adulthood, and even adolescent dating violence. Adolescence is an essential transitional stage, so dating violence puts development at risk. In Chile, studies on adolescent dating violence are just emerging and still show a gap. Aim: To examine the relationship between abuse during childhood with victimization and perpetration experiences for adolescent dating violence. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 242 adolescents between 14 and 19 years of age (59% females) who completed the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationship Inventory (CADRI) and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CQT-SF), both in their Spanish version. Multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the degree of association between sexual, emotional, and physical abuse during childhood with adolescent dating violence. Results: Sexual and emotional abuse were predictors of dating victimization. In addition, sexual and physical abuse were found to be predictors of perpetration. Conclusions: Our study supports the evidence on differentiated outcomes between adolescent dating victimization and perpetration. Moreover, it highlights the role of childhood sexual abuse as a predictor of both.

Growing Up with Intimate Partner Violence at Home: Adolescents’ Narratives on Their Coping Strategies

Purpose The research on adolescents who have grown up around intimate partner violence (IPV) between their parents or caregivers has mostly focused on adolescent’s victimization experiences and the negative impact of this type of violence on their mental health. More research is needed on how they respond to these experiences. The aim of this study is to understand adolescents’ coping strategies regarding IPV between their parents or caregivers, from their perspectives. Methods The participants were ten adolescents between 12 and 17 years old (4 female and 6 male), users of protection programs in Chile. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, using thematic narrative analysis afterward. Results The results show seven coping strategies: intervention, social support seeking, protective role, positive resignification, hypervigilance, escape-avoidance, and denial. The narratives of the adolescents indicate that they face not only specific episodes of IPV but also the consequences and family dynamics that accompany this type of violence. Conclusion Adolescents’ coping strategies can be organized in a continuum of IPV integration-distancing, based on the degree and form of involvement in the experience. Growing up with IPV at home demands an early development of the sense of agency and taking a position in the face of violence, transitioning between active and victim roles.
