The Evolution of Personalized Healthcare and the Pivotal Role of European Regions in its Implementation

Abstract: Personalized medicine (PM) moves at the same pace of data and technology and calls for important changes in healthcare. New players are participating, providing impulse to PM. We review the conceptual foundations for PM and personalized healthcare and their evolution through scientific publications where a clear definition and the features of the different formulations are identifiable. We then examined PM policy documents of the International Consortium for Personalised Medicine and related initiatives to und… Show more

“…The understanding of the underlying mechanisms and causes of chronic diseases is transforming medicine from a reactive discipline to a proactive and preventive one. Therefore, a Predictive, Preventive, Personalized and Participatory Medicine (medicine P4) [ 40 ] which also applies to nutrition, with the objectives of quantifying well-being, will predict and prevent disease. Consumers are different in each country and the form of salt consumption is also different.…”

“…Predictive models play a key role in bolstering decision systems, and ML techniques have outstanding potential to create models with an excellent level of accuracy [ 70 ]. They have been used to identify useful correlations between biometric, genetic and environmental data with the potential risks and benefits of certain therapeutic choices [ 71 ]. They also have great potential to exceed the performance of physicians’ heuristics, reducing lags in diagnosis and treatment costs when their application is extended from the genomic and biometric data to the clinical and demographic data in the patient’s records.…”

“…It is here that the role played by Patient Centered Care ensures the active engagement of the patient by bringing his personal needs and preferences into the decision-making process. Nardini et al 2021 [ 50 ] describe a new healthcare configuration that includes personalized, predictive, preventive, participatory and person-centered care approaches, to be applied to all areas of medicine. Agreeing with such findings, this review recognizes how both models together are needed to ensure a positive and effective change in the path of patient care and attempts to tailor such a transition to the context of breast cancer care.…”
