Silencing MdGH3-2/12 in apple reduces drought resistance by regulating AM colonization

Abstract: Drought leads to reductions in plant growth and crop yields. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which form symbioses with the roots of the most important crop species, alleviate drought stress in plants. In the present work, we identified 14 GH3 genes in apple (Malus domestica) and provided evidence that MdGH3-2 and MdGH3-12 play important roles during AM symbiosis. The expression of both MdGH3-2 and MdGH3-12 was upregulated during mycorrhization, and the silencing of MdGH3-2/12 had a negative impact on AM co… Show more

“…Moreira et al 51 found that coffee plants inoculated with R. clarus had a higher mycorrhizal colonization (39%) and root dry matter than noninoculated plants, in soils at 71% of field capacity. Inoculation with AMF of different species has also been shown to potentially mitigate the effects of drought stress and increase resistance in bean 52 , rice 53 , tomato 54 , wheat 55 , and in orange 15 and apple 56 trees.…”

“…According to these authors, the increase in mycorrhizal colonization was su cient to mitigate water stress in plants of C. lanatus and L. barbarum. Also, AMF inoculation has been described as a potential tool used to mitigate the effects of water de cit and increase plant resistance in bean 48 , rice 49 , tomato 50 , wheat 51 , and trees 52,53 .…”

“…In a study, it was noted AMF improve the expression of TdDRF1 and induce drought tolerance in wheat plants ( Fiorilli et al, 2022 ). AMF also up-regulates the expression of MdGH3-2 and MdGH3-12 which improve the plant RWC, photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll contents, and scavenging of ROS in apple plants ( Huang et al, 2021 ). Conversely, silencing of MdGH3-2/12 genes from apple plants negatively affected AMF colonization, plant growth, and subsequent development under DS ( Huang et al, 2021 ).…”
